On the Hardwood

Texas Tech basketball announced 8 games of their non-conference schedule, which includes some Jackson State, Bethune-Cookman, Illinois, Stonehill College, New Orleans, Omaha, Incarnate Word, and Mississippi Valley State. Texas Tech is also scheduled to play Duke and be part of the Players Era in Las Vegas against Duke.

“I think the thing we’ve done with our transfers here, we’ve hit on the guys not only from a football perspective, but I think culturally,” said Justin Johnson, the Tech assistant head coach and wide receivers coach. “I think we’ve done a good job of figuring out and identifying guys that are going to fit into our culture, and those [four transfers] come in and fit into our culture. … And so, although I gained some new guys, quite honestly, I gained a few leaders.”

I asked Johnson on Thursday, whether there has been much separation between the first and second groups and if Texas Tech could legitimately rotate six or seven receivers on a consistent basis.

According to Johnson, enough players have shown they are ready to make that a realistic possibility.

“Yeah, I think going into the season, I think there’s guys that have showed on a consistent basis that they’re ready for snaps,” Johnson said. “And so our plan is to rotate with a little more depth. You’ll see six to seven guys in the rotation out there.”
