The Morning Stake: Texas Tech Junior Day Update; Offer to Jalen Hurts

Texas Tech held their junior day and we’ve got updates from as many sources as we can find. Texas Tech has offered 2016 QB Jalen Hurts and OG Toleafoa Auwae.  The baseball team is swept by Cal State Fullerton this weekend and the basketball team starts the Big 12 Championship on Wednesday against Texas.

Good to be back after a weekend away. Thanks to everyone for helping out.

Texas Tech Junior Day.

First and foremost, please make sure and follow Texas Tech Edits on the Twitter, who put together the picture edit that you see above (and “edit” is what people much cooler than you call a photoshop collage of sorts) that lists the players who supposed to attend Texas Tech’s junior day. TTU Edits had the list of the folks making their way to Lubbock for junior day, which was this weekend, where the current juniors (or seniors-to-be) are visiting Texas Tech and you’ll also see some sophomores (or juniors-to-be) also visiting. That’s right, you get two different classes, the 2016 class and the 2017 class that are represented.

I’ll do my best to hit the highlights and I’ll always do my best to point you in the right direction. Most of the updates consist of these juniors and sophomores tweeting photos and things of that nature. Both Wreck’Em 24/7 and Raider Power both have these terrific summaries. If you’re totally into that, then that’s a great place to start today. I’d also recommend Wreck’Em 24/7’s Michael LaBarre and his possible Red Raiders feature.

A lot of you have maybe been wondering how we’ll cover recruiting moving forward and there’s just no way that I can duplicate the information that Mike did for us on a weekly basis. There’s just too much information and I just don’t have enough time to keep track of all of the players and all of the players receiving offers.  This is a compliment to Mike and an admission that I can only do so much, but I do promise to do a lot more in regards to recruiting.

What I do think that I will do in regards to recruiting is taking these players in huge chunks, not necessarily as the news happens, but we’ll take a look at the coaching staff is recruiting at a position, or maybe we’ll take a look at the offers out West, in California and Hawaii, or we’ll check in on how Kevin Curtis is recruiting SEC country. The reason I think I’ll be better at this is that the recruiting game changes quickly, and I’m afraid that by the time I hit publish, I’ll be 3 days behind. I think this way, I’ll be better suited to write more comprehensive pieces.

Texas Tech Offers Hurts & Auwae. According to Wreck’Em 24/7’s Daniel Pauling Texas Tech has offered Channelview QB Jalen Hurts, who is a 4-star quarterback from the Houston area (I did not know what Channelview was, but it is a town in the Houston area and this demonstrates my ignorance of the Houston area). Hurts has offers from Mississipppi State, Texas A&M and now Texas Tech. Per 24/7 Sports, Texas Tech also offered Hawaii OG Toleafoa Auwae, a 3-star from the islands and is the first power five offer for Auwae.

Baseball Swept. In a bit of a bummer of a weekend for the baseball team, they were swept in California by Cal State Fullerton. All three games were pretty close, losing 4-0 in game one, game two 3-2 and losing yesterday, 6-5. The Red Raiders will be back in action tomorrow against New Mesico State and then will head out west again for a three game series against San Diego State starting on Friday.

Texas Tech to Face Texas in Big 12 Championship. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship starts on Wednesday and Texas Tech will play Texas at 8:00 pm to advance to the second round and play Iowa State. Our friend, Fox Sports’ David Ubben has his power rankings this week, with Texas Tech 10th overall. The Big 12 post season awards were also released this week and Texas Tech was shut out of that. This will change next year (I’m pretty confident of that).
