Texas Tech Football Notebook: Cosgrove Talks Linebackers; Monroe Glad to be Home

This is actually from Wednesday, but they posted the wrong video (which is no big deal) and had it corrected some time yesterday. In any event up is linebackers coach Kevin Cosgrove and safety Eric Monroe.

Linebacker Coach Kevin Cosgrove

Tremendous motor and smart football player, just watching him this spring, the way he has progressed is pretty impressive and looks to be a man on a mission.

I like hte depth we’ve added, we have young guys that are talented and will continue to get better, Krishon Merriweather has taken a step in the last couple of days. Jacob Morgenstern who has been very impressive, and Brandon who is a gifted athlete. And then you have young guys are starting to take a step. Kosi Eldridge is impressive, terrific motor. Ty Matthews has taken steps as has Bryce Robinson. A guy that is steppign up is Bryce Ramirez. He’s on a mission too, tremendous motor and pretty athletic. Good depth at the linebacker position. Continue to play smarter and look forward to that improvement every day.

Riko is inside as is Krishon and Brandon is outside. We are very multiple, very odd multiple defense. KP has different ways to create looks for offenses.

I think that guys have the ability, Morgenstern, Ramirez, Kosi Eldridge are outisde guys, can play both outside and inside. We have guys that can be multiple.

We’re definitely going to rely on them, we like veteran players to develop younger players. And hte younger players are devloping at a good pace. The older players are physically more mature, but it enables us to get that leadership and can help develop the younger guys.

You get a good idea of athletic ability off of tape, but what you lack as far is recruiting, when you get into a school, you get to know people. you can find out more about the person you are getting and it is important to get the right kind of kid. We’re working hard and we’re doing the zoom, but you don’t get to know the kid if you were in person.

When you get a program, and it goes back to KP’s scheme, which is a linebacker friendly defense. jordyn was able to do that last year. It is made for linebackers who made plays. Him being a first rounder, we’re getting interest and we have to continue to develop relationships.

I didn’t work with his position group, but got to know him quite well. Guys don’t complain and try to help each other get better. Unfortunately he had some injuries, he got hurt and they continued to recruit so he didn’t get the playing time. He played, but he never had a bad look and he always encouraged. He had athletic ability, I thought it would be a good fit.

Smart, tough and dependable.

Tough, physical, and love football. He continues to get better every day. We throw a lot at the kids and he is continuing to develop and starting to pick up things quite well. He is not where he needs to be, but he is eager, he loves the game and the physicalness. I look for him to improve and have a good year.

I have guys that are continuing to develop, Kosi Eldridge has realy taken a step. Ty Bryce, Ramirez, and there’s not question that Jacob Morgenstern is going to play as well.

Safety Eric Monroe

Coach Wells and his staff did a great job here. I’m from Houston, coming back home. Just being back in Texas, that’s why I chose Texas Tech.

It is all about mindset, that’s what you have inside. That’s you as a person. If you want to achieve it and step up and raise the bar high.

I feel right in, the guys opened me with open arms. Zech McPhearson has helped me, just being a family.

Time management, don’t have much time to wiat, have to get on board.

Coming out of high school, they recruited me, I took the step to go to LSU, but this is home. I’m in the state of Texas and that’s big.

I had a lot of hamstring problems, when I had them, they bumped me down and had to wait my turn. My hamstring was tough on me and just getting back to myself is what i’m trying to focus on.

Tommy, Zech, Frye, really the whole group. We have some great guys in the secondary. Everyone playing their role and doing the best that they can.

I had seen a lot and the 4 years at LSU, I played behind 1st rounders, and I wanted to be just like them and take some of their knowledge and give it to the guys here. If they have questions, they ask me and vice versa. Just being a big brother to them.

We are ready and we have a great group of guys in this locker room and we can’t wait until we get the ball rolling. I’m excited.

Since the pandemic, we should have gotten our rings during the spring game, maybe a couple of months ago. An awards ceremony where we got the ring. It was about a month ago. We got to do that in person.

I’m picking up the playbook fast. I’m impressed at myself. They threw so much at us. The concepts are the same, just different names for them. I have great guys in the locker room helping me out so I can do my job.

Dallas Morning News’ Chuck Carlton writes about quarterback Alan Bowman’s desire to stay healthy:

Bowman acknowledged that he could have probably returned for the final two games of the regular season but opted to take the redshirt season instead and preserve a year of eligibility.

“So I was more comfortable, saying, ‘Hey, let’s take an offseason. Let’s get bigger, faster, stronger. Let’s get another year in the offense,’” Bowman said.

Bowman has been tantalizingly good when healthy. In 11 games and 10 career starts, Bowman has completed 68.2% of his passes for 3,658 yards and 23 touchdowns. He’s 6-4 as a starter and the favorite to take the first snap when Tech opens the season Sept. 12 against Houston Baptist.

Bowman’s chief competition is redshirt freshman Maverick McIvor.

“Alan’s in the lead. Very confident. Further along in the offense really than he’s ever been which we knew it takes reps in this offense,” Wells said this week. “I think Maverick has got to continue to understand that there’s a sense of urgency all the time and he needs to make up ground. …”It’s up to Alan to continue to keep a lead on the job and earn his reps.

A scary situation. Last night it was reported that TCU quarterback Max Duggan has a medical condition that may keep him out for the season. The condition was not disclosed, but it is something that Duggan was born with. Texas Football’s Shehan Jeyarajah has additional details.
