Game Recap

Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: Pretty easy for me. Bryson Williams was 9 of 11 from the floor, 22 points, 7 boards, a turnover, block, and a steal. Most efficient player on the floor and couldn’t be stopped in the post. He’s going to be fun.

Multi-Purpose Player of the Game: Going to be Davion Warren who was fantastic defensively, was 7 of 10 from the floor and 14 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and just 2 turnovers. Incredible debut.

Game Notes:

  • the offense is definitely interesting and I’m a fan. during the offseason, the writing on the wall seemed to indicate that Texas Tech would start a more modern offense, one where there was plenty drive-and-dish, outside shooting, and finishing at the rim. It’s a work in progress, but I like the direction and think it will serve this team well. I’d think that Texas Tech will need guards hitting more three-point shots, but it is one game and I’m not going to worry right now.
  • Texas Tech dominated the offensive boards and if you wanted to point to one reason why Texas Tech was winning this game, it would be second chance points.
  • Davion Warren was really sort of a revelation. Much better than expected and I really don’t know what I expected. He was really active, took excellent shots and that was something that I was concerned about prior to the season was that Warren was a volume shooter for Hampton and he really worked to get a good shot.
  • Also clear that Texas Tech capitalized on North Florida’s mistakes, converting 24 points off of the 17 Osprey turnovers. North Florida could only convert 8. Also of note, Texas Tech had 12 fast break points while North Florida had none, which speaks to the defense getting back.
  • Texas Tech had 54 points in the paint. This was largely part of the new offense where Texas Tech was just driving to the basket, but the other part was Williams just dominating the post.
  • On a meta level, the best players for Texas Tech last night from a box plus/minus standpoint was Mylik Wilson, Warren, Obanor, Williams, and Santos-Silva.
  • The efficiency of Williams, Warren, and Santos-Silva was what saved this game because combined, they were 22 of 32 which is fan-freaking-tastic and they were just men among boys when it came to dominating
  • It was great listening to Clark Lammert on the TV, he did a great job as the color analyst. He was absolutely correct from the standpoint that Texas Tech needed to close out on the three-point line because that was pretty terrible and North Florida stated in this game because they shot so many three-point shots and were pretty efficient, making 44% (11 of 25). That’s quite different than Texas Tech’s 27% (4 of 15).
  • If you would have asked me who led the team in assists I would have probably said McCullar, but Mylik Wilson had 7 assists and 1 turnover in 28 minutes.
  • Head Coach Mark Adams: “I’ll start by saying the Raider Riot, our student section, season ticket holders and overall Red Raider Nation were just outstanding,” Adams said. “We talked about it all last year, we talked to our recruits about it and they didn’t let us down. Our guys embraced it and I think they might have played a little better because of it. I was pleased with our poise on offense. I thought we were patient when we needed to be but liked the tempo, how we were pushing the ball down the floor. We shared the ball well and scored in a lot of different ways, which is encouraging.”
