Starting 5

1. Stats. Jackson State is a bit of a mess except for one constant that we’ll get to in a second. Offensively, they ar ea team that turns the ball over 23.8% of the time, 351st in the nation. They are 356th in the nation in free throw rate and the Tigers are 273rd in 2-point shooting and 166th in 3-point shooting. Defensively, Jackson State is allowing opponents to shoot really well, allowing 39% from 3-point range at 343rd overall and 57% from 2-point range which is good for 339th in the nation. The one thing that the Tigers do well? They are great at offensive rebounding, 45th in the nation on offense and 30th in the nation on defense. Kind of incredible that a team can be so good at just one thing.

2. Scouting. Jackson State is obviously 1-9, but they only lost to Mississippi State and Michigan by 10, they have a win over SMU, but was blown out by TCU. Jones is probably the best player, but only plays half of available minutes. He’s a good rebounder, a good shooter, but doesn’t shoot anything from deep. Coltie Young would be next up, another good shooter and is really a great 3-point shooter, 41%, and he really only takes 3-point shots so as the ball swings, you’ve got to have a man on him because he’s really good. Evans and Hunt are the best passers on the team and Trace Young.

3. How They Match Up. I think Mark Adams is going to have to give more time to the bench, the team will be run ragged if he doesn’t give a bit more leash. And I get the fact that the turnovers are an issue, and when he tightens that lineup, it magically is solved (it’s not magic, it’s just not turning the ball over), but I get the feeling that Williams and Walton will be needed at some point this year. Texas Tech is trending down.

Oh, and let’s address the Fardaws Aimaq situation. Again, I am so thankful I am not a reporter, I get to just sit back and let the news happen. Aimaq entered the transfer portal and then announced yesterday that he would return. I am sure there is smoke to the fire, don’t believe that everything is hunky-dory, but he’s here and if/when he plays, that frontcourt is going to be fantastic.

One other item, which is that Tyson and Isaacs are shooting incredibly well from 3-point range, Tyson is shooting 48% and Isaacs 43%. Obanor is not shooting well, 28%, Harmon is shooting 19%, Walton is shooting 15%, Washington 17%, and Williams is shooting 25%. If guys that have traditionally shot well in their careers start shooting well and stop turning the ball over, it could be really good. Shot-making cures a lot of woes.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

Texas Tech takes a three-game winning streak down to Houston where it plays Jackson State at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday inside the Delmar Fieldhouse in the second annual Coaches vs. Racism HBCU Roundball Classic. The Red Raiders (7-2) are coming off a 77-70 win over Eastern Washington on Tuesday to extend a 27-game home winning streak, while the Tigers (1-9) fell 69-59 to No. 17 Mississippi State on Wednesday night.

Tech is playing a basketball game in Houston for the first time since December 14, 2001, when it earned a 71-64 win over the University of Houston in a game that was played at the Compaq Center. The matchup between Texas Tech and Jackson State will be available through a stream on HBCUGO.tv and on the Texas Tech Sports Network with Geoff Haxton and Chris Level on the radio call. It is part of a doubleheader with Prairie View A&M and Montana playing in the first game of the day.
