The Morning Stake | 2023.05.01

Kind of a junky weekend. Both baseball and softball lost their respective series this weekend, the softball team wasn’t necessarily expected to win, saw a stat that said that the ladies had not beat Oklahoma State since 2018. They are making progress and am proud how they have ended their regular season. They’ll have the Big 12 Championship coming up May 11th through the 13th.

Baseball however lost 2 of 3 to Kansas State, who was ahead of Texas Tech in the Big 12 standings. It’s getting a bit desperate for Texas Tech and probably need to sweep a series, but I don’t know if they have the bullpen to do that. Up next is Sam Houston State this weekend and then the two final series are at West Virginia and home to Kansas.

Tyree Wilson was drafted 7th overall by the Las Vegas Raiders and that was it for drafted players. However, Marquis Waters signed a free agent deal with the New York Jets, SaRodorick Thompson signed with New Orleans, and kicker Trey Wolff signed with the Tennessee Titans. I hope all of those men go chase those dreams.

Chris Level was on The Solid Verbal with Dan Rubenstein and before you roll your eyes, Dan does a really nice job of knowing quite a bit about Texas Tech.

I’ve been Jonesin for some basketball info and I think that Grant McCasland works incredibly quietly, I don’t think we heard about Chance McMillian or Darrion Williams much before they committed and if you look at McCasland’s twitter, he doesn’t follow anyone so there’s not much of a tell regarding what’s happening. In fact, my guess is that this is upsetting people, but I also think things are happening, we’re just not seeing it. Verbal Commitments has a nice list of players offered. Nothing really new, but it’s a good list and believe it is up to date.

UTEP guard Jazion Jackson committed to Krista Gerlich and the Lady Raiders, averaging 11.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists for the Miners last year. Jackson’s teammate Elina Arike is also visiting this week and she also averaged a bit over 11 points a game.

[UPDATE] Remembered that this happened, but forgot in original post. Huge weekend for the Lady Raiders.

If you need a brightener for the day, Youssouf had his first 7-on-7 flag football game for his 5th grade team on Sunday where he played 2 games, about 30 to 40 minutes each and he caught 5 touchdowns and had 4 interceptions. Went 2-0.
