Want to see someone go mad? Stick around and watch me try to write game previews and game recaps for basketball while also trying to fulfill football duties. Let’s see how it goes on Monday when basketball starts.
On the Pitch
Taylor Zdrojewski was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. Congrats!
On the Hardwood
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf with the top 100 basketball players with write-ups on each: #88 Donovan Atwell; #43 Darrion Williams; and JT Toppin #7.
ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Myron Medcalf ranks the teams in tiers and they have Texas Tech in Tier IV “Wide range of expectations due to eligibility issues”:
Texas Tech and St. John’s are at the top of this tier. If all of their in-limbo players are allowed to play, both are legitimate Final Four contenders and conference championship threats. The Red Raiders are awaiting decisions on Darrion Williams, who was an all-Big 12 performer two seasons ago before transferring to NC State for a year; Donovan Atwell, a returning starter and one of the best 3-and-D players in the league; and UCF transfer Jamichael Stillwell. Atwell’s trial date isn’t scheduled until June, meaning he’s the most likely to remain eligible all season. Meanwhile, St. John’s still has three players awaiting decisions from the courts after international arrival Quinn Ellis was cleared to play: Auburn transfer Keyshawn Hall, former G-Leaguer Babacar Sane and Indiana transfer Reed Bailey. Rick Pitino could start at least two of those players.
Toughest Team Wins espisode #2. A lot of this focuses on JT Toppin’s injury recovery and the return of Darrion Williams. This is the most I’ve ever heard Toppin talk.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams reports that Texas Tech is near a deal against a Power 4 opponent in week 0. No details on who it is.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese on board of regent president Cody Campbell saying that he fully supports Joey McGuire as the head coach. I am sure some of you have already said this, but it is amazing that there are writers out there writing about possible replacements if McGuire is fired. It is important to maybe distinguish people who are actual reporters and people who write on the internet with the intent of creating content. I probably fall in the latter category, but as you are well aware, I am creating content with the idea of reporting the actual news and not making stories up to create clicks. I tend to think that the Texas Tech media ecosystem is generally pretty good about just reporting things rather than creating stories. In any event, here’s the exchange. If you don’t have x/Twitter then here’s a screenshot.
