Texas Tech baseball won in walk-off fashion against the Sooners, 10-9. Texas Tech would find themselves down twice, 5-0 and 9-5, before having to come back. At the 3:05 mark is where you see 3 different singles that put men on base for Kevin Bazzell to knock a single through the OU 3rd baseman for the win. The Big 12 bracket is continually updated and Texas Tech will play the winner between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State who play today, but Texas Tech plays the winner on Saturday.

Midland Reporter-Telegram’s Oscar LeRoy writes about how both Joey McGuire and Grant McCasland acknowledged that recruiting is key to success for their respective teams:

“One thing I told them in the interview process is we have to identify and recruit guys that are supposed to play at Texas Tech or Texas or Texas A&M, or whatever,” McGuire said. “If they are West Texas kids, we’ve got to identify them, we’ve got to get on them early and then we’ve got to recruit them to get to Texas Tech. I think that’s one thing we’ve been able to do and we’ve been successful. We had a good number our first year and we had a great number this last year of guys coming in. I think there are seven or eight guys who are coming in May 29. We’ve got guys right now who are committed to us who are West Texas kids.”

“I think basketball is basketball but the athleticism in the Big 12 and the unique skill that is in the conference, you just have to find two-way players,” he said. “You can’t have guys that just play on one end of the floor. You’ve got to be a great defensive team and you’ve got to be a great offensive team. All the teams in the Big 12 are like top 25 in both areas, especially the ones that make the NCAA Tournament. We’ve always had success in different ways, but I think we have to have a combination of the two to compete right away.”

CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli is ranking the Power Five coaches and Joey McGuire checks in at No. 46 moving up 16 spots from last year:

Joey McGuire: I was skeptical of the McGuire hire at Texas Tech, but I’ve quickly come around after one season. My fellow voters seem even higher as he climbed 16 spots up to No. 46 after an 8-5 record last season. More importantly, Tech’s 5-4 mark in the Big 12 was the first time it finished a season with a winning record in the league since Leach’s final season in 2009. Three coaches have tried and failed to do so, and McGuire did it in his first year. 2022 rank: 62 (+16)

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd writes about the Big 12 and ACC grant of rights:

So ironclad, in fact, that Big 12 legal minds developed the strategy relying on a landmark 115-year old Supreme Court case that traced its roots back to British Common Law in the 1600s. So ironclad that the Big 12 incorporated itself in Delaware, a state so business-friendly that 65% of Fortune 500 companies file their incorporation papers there.

So ironclad that the verbiage in these contracts might have saved both conferences from near-extinction.

While Texas and Oklahoma did cause significant upheaval in leaving the Big 12, it cost the programs a combined $100 million to exit the league in 2024, a year before the Big 12’s grant of rights was to expire. (The schools had already notified the Big 12 they wouldn’t agree to an extension of those rights.)

On Wednesday, the ACC stiff-armed rumblings of a mutiny by going to a performance-based revenue model. It’s seemingly unbreakable grant of rights quelled any talk of a more significant uprising.
