Texas Tech Football Notebook: Houston Game Day Links

If you had any doubt about whether or not Sharon Leach and her children were on board with Mike Leach’s induction into the Hall of Honor, take the 5 minutes to watch this. This was really well done, incredibly well put together. When Leach’s son, Cody, does the play-by-play of the 2008 Texas game, I sort of lose it. I can hear Mike in his voice.

I just want to say thanks again for this honor and recognition for Mike. Our family is truly appreciative, so thank you.
–Sharon Leach

The accompanying video is great too. This is not about the administration, but about Mike, the Leach family, his players, the people in the program, and the fans. Sometimes life doesn’t have to be complicated.

The Texas Tech YouTube page has links to all of the videos, including Rodney Allison, Jason Young, Matt Wingo, Greg Lowery, Kliff Kingsbury, Kim Kaufman, Gonzalo Escobar, and Cathy Carlson.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese – Texas Tech football vs. Houston: Scouting report, projected starters & predictions:

When Houston football passes
Texas Tech will see an old friend occupying the quarterback position for Houston. Donovan Smith transferred to Houston and has stepped in as the leading man for Dana Holgorsen’s squad. To this point, he has completed 62.3% of his passes for 1,012 yards, five TDs and three interceptions. His legs, as the Red Raiders know, are also a weapon. Smith leads the team with 46 rushing attempts, accounting for 104 yards and three scores on the ground. Tech has struggled against mobile quarterbacks with Wyoming’s Andrew Peasley, Oregon’s Bo Nix and West Virginia’s Nicco Marchiol totaling 186 yards on 39 attempts (4.7 yards per). Malik Dunlap has come up with three interceptions in the last two games.
Advantage: Houston

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams – Kliff Kingsbury: Being honored with Mike Leach makes night special:

“Really, that’s what makes this night special for me,” Kingsbury told emcee Robert Giovannetti, “is that coach Leach is going in. A guy who, as B.J. knows and a lot of other guys in this room, believed in us when we didn’t believe in ourselves, helped us reach levels that we never thought we could reach.”

Leach’s tenure at Tech ended in bitter dispute after he was fired in December 2009 over mistreatment of a player. He went on to coach at Washington State and Mississippi State, amassing a career record of 158-107.

“He will be more and more honored and revered as time goes by and people see exactly what he meant to the game,” Kingsbury said.

Red Raider Sports’ Jarrett Ramirez – Tech hosts Cougars for Hall of Fame weekend:

Houston, as mentioned before, is led by former Red Raider Donovan Smith at quarterback. Though Smith assumed the role left behind by Clayton Tune, Holgorsen’s team has a Nathaniel “Tank” Dell sized-hole in the offense that has yet to be filled. Matthew Golden has been touted as the successor to Dell, and he has four touchdown receptions this season. Houston native and freshman running back Parker Jenkins has emerged as a viable option out of the backfield. Jenkins carried the rock 20 times for 105 yards and three touchdowns in the Cougars’ win over Sam Houston State.

The Houston defense is headlined by its ability to force takeaways. Malik Fleming, a 5-foot-8 defensive back, is tied for second in the conference for interceptions with three. The Cougars are tied for 13th in the NCAA with nine total turnovers forced. The bulk of defensive playmakers for Houston are upfront, the most notable being Nelson Ceaser. A 6-foot-3 defensive end, Ceaser is also in tie for second place in the Big 12 with 3.5 sacks to his name.

Red Raider Sports’ Julio Gonzales, Jr. – The Recruiting Six-Pack: 2025 OT Lamont Rogers names TTU in Top 12 schools:

Dontae Carter. Safety, Cibolo, Texas. (Steele HS). 5. 7, four-star safety, #84 prospect in TX.

The Red Raiders offered Dontae Carter in April, and he was in Lubbock for an official visit in June. However, he committed to Vanderbilt on July 8 over offers from Texas Tech, Baylor, Houston, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oregon State, and Washington, among others. Of course, when it comes to recruiting, programs still communicate with prospects when they are committed, as do other recruits. With that being the case, watch for the Red Raiders with Carter. Micah Hudson, the newest Red Raider recruit, replied to one of Carter’s tweets a few days ago. That could be something, or it could be absolutely nothing. But it is something worth watching.

Ludvid Aberg and Europe are dunking on the Americans in the Ryder Cup right now.
