College Hoops Today’s Jon Rothstein reports that the Big 12 is considering playing 20 league basketball games in the 2024-25 seasons. Currently, the Big 12 plays 18. I think the idea here is that the more games that are competitive, the better the TV deal, and this could also improve some of those advanced metrics that help propel teams into the NCAA Tournament. Yormark also seems especially interested in basketball, with the near possible additions of UConn and Gonzaga, basketball does not appear to be something he doesn’t care about.

Texas Tech soccer plays their biggest game of the year as they will face No. 7 BYU in Provo on Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m. I’ll post this again tomorrow, but the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Carter Yates writes about what could have been when Baylor had the opportunity to hire Joey McGuire rather than Dave Aranda:

A Baylor win justifies that decision. Yes, they already have a Big 12 Championship to back up the choice, but Aranda would also move to 2–0 vs McGuire after the Bears walked into Lubbock last year and demolished Texas Tech, 45-17. The Red Raiders would tumble to 2–4 in a year they were dark horse Big 12 title contenders. McGuire’s road record as a head coach would crash to 1–7, opening the door to questioning if his jovial demeanor and the energy he’s created at Texas Tech has any on-field substance in the short-term.

But a loss would make it feel, whether substantively right or wrong, that Baylor chose incorrectly.

Because Texas Tech’s scouting and recruiting department is full of former Baylor staffers loyal to their once-head coach, Matt Rhule, and his school of thought. James Blanchard, now Tech’s general manager, was McGuire’s first hire when he got the job. He chooses who Texas Tech offers and tells the position coaches who to recruit. Brian Nance, the director of player personnel, and Harrison Hanna, director of operations and recruiting, are also rising stars molded in their formative years by Baylor.

Volleyball is set to take on UCF tonight at home at 6:00 p.m. with the game broadcast on ESPN+.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams reports that Baylor defensive back transfer A.J. McCarty was denied immediate eligibility, but will have all of 2024 and 2025 as eligible seasons.
