Starting 5

1. Stats. Oral Roberts does not play many players. They are middling offensively, largely because they don’t turn the ball over, 11th in the nation. They are not a good offensive rebounding team, 349th, and they shoot okay, 100th in 3-point shooting and 240th in 2-point shooting. Defensively there are more issues, they don’t turn teams over, 290th in the nation and they allow a ton of offensive boards, 348th. What saves them is that they are terrific at defending inside the arc, 48th in the nation, and they block a ton of shots, 55th in the nation.

2. Scouting. McBride is the most heavy-use player. Low turnover and high-assist and shoots really well inside the arc for a guard and decently from deep. Weaver shoots more 3’s than 2’s, but shoots 63% inside, has a high block rate and very low turnover numbers. Bedford doesn’t shoot all that well, 39% from inside and 35% outside, but is also a low-turnover guy. Thompson is the least efficient player and almost never comes off the floor, 99% of all minutes played. He shoots better outside, 36% than inside the arc, 35%, and is not a good rebounder.

3. How They Match Up. I don’t know how this will play out for Texas Tech with Cambridge lost for the year. I’ve put Walton in the starting lineup, but am not sure if McCasland will want more length and maybe Jennings or Lindsay would get the call so you’ve got some offensive punch off the bench in McMillian and Walton. Maybe it will be game specific. Texas Tech should have advantages inside, especially on the boards. Texas Tech has a good defense, 41st in free throw rate, 73rd in 3-point shooting defense, and 71st in free throw rate. The offense needs work, but it has been better. The 3-point shooting has gone from near 20% to 32% and that’s a difficult hole to dig yourself out of.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

The Red Raiders (6-2) are coming off an 87-58 win over Omaha in their only game last Wednesday, while ORU (4-4) earned wins over Tulsa and Ozark Christian last week. Kerwin Walton led Tech in that game with a career-high 22 points after making 6-for-7 from beyond the arc and Joe Toussaint went for 20 points and four assists. The team will be playing without Devan Cambridge for the first time this season after he suffered a season-ending knee injury during the game against Omaha. Cambridge had started all eight games to start the season and was averaging 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He is at 983 points and 515 rebounds in his career.

“Oral Roberts is a team that knows how to win,” Tech coach Grant McCasland said. “They went undefeated in conference play last year and have a lot of continuity in their program. You can tell they have a winning DNA. They just had a great win against Tulsa and took Kansas State into overtime. Their offensive is really clicking with a really good spacing plan and put you in a lot of tough spots. Our defense will have to be tremendous against them. They don’t turn the ball over and have guys who can make great individual 1-on-1 plays. It’ll be a challenge for us defensively and offensively we’ll have to continue taking care of the ball and take great shots.”
