Starting 5

1. Stats. Just an FYI, McCullar didn’t play against Baylor, which is why he’s not listed in the starting lineup. I don’t know if he’ll be healthy for this game with such a short turnaround, which is why I’m listing him, but not as a starter. Also, if you’re going to boo McCullar, that’s your prerogative, however, it would seem that he may have left for a better opportunity and maybe also because he didn’t want to be coached by Mark Adams, which I sort of understand at this point. Back to Kansas. They are terrific offensively . . . again. they have two big weak points, which is that they are a terrible offensive rebounding team, 272nd in the nation and not great at getting to the line, 209th. But they are a terrific shooting team, 67th in the nation in 3-point shooting and 19th in 2-0oint shooting. Defensively, they are top shelf at holding opponents’ 2-pointn shooting, 13th, and 122nd in 3-point shooting so there’s a window there for sure. The Jayhawks are 68th in opponent free throw rate and 86th in holding opponents from grabbing offensive boards.

2. Scouting. McCullar is the best player and he along with Dickinson are the highest usage players. McCullar is an okay shooter, but still not a great 3-point shooter, just 37%. Harris is a good shooter at 45% so watch out for that. Dickinson is the inside presence you would expect, a terrific rebounder on both sides, low turnover guy, and high block percent as well as being a very good shooter inside the arc. Adams and Furphy are terrific 2-point shooters, 64% for Adams and 76% for Furphy. Sort of insane.

3. How They Match Up. Believe it or not, T-Rank has Texas Tech as a 0.9 point favorite. I think Texas Tech has some advantages in that they are a good shooting team on offense, especially from deep, 25th in the nation. And Texas Tech had so many outside misses against UCF, what are the chances it happens again (don’t answer that!). Texas Tech should be able to matchup with Dickson and with Washington being pretty careful with fouls, I think that will be good. I don’t know how Texas Tech matches up with the athleticism of Adams, but that’s a Big 12 problem.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

No. 23 Texas Tech is set to host No. 4 Kansas at 8 p.m. in an ESPN Big Monday matchup at United Supermarkets Arena.

The Red Raiders (17-6, 6-4 Big 12) are 12-1 at home after earning a 66-59 win over UCF on Saturday night, while the Jayhawks (19-5, 7-4 Big 12) come into the game with a 1-4 road record in conference play that includes a 75-70 overtime loss at Kansas State last Monday. KU bounced back with a 64-61 win over No. 13 Baylor on Saturday at home. Tech is currently 3-3 against ranked opponents this season and will be looking for its first top-10 win of the season and first since a home win last season against No. 6 Texas. Updated rankings come out at noon on Monday.
