Starting 5

1. Stats. Iowa State is top 40 on offense overall, they are a very good shooting team, 71st in 2-point shooting and 91st in 3-point shooting, 59th in the nation in offensive rebounding and 47th in free throw rate. They do tend to turn the ball over a bit, 91st overall, and although they do get to the line, they are only 260th in free throw percentage. Now on defense, the Cyclones are bonkers, 1st in the nation in turning teams over, 28th in opponent 2-point shooting, and that alone is the recipe to a fantastic defense.

2. Scouting. The normal stat page that I use to look at players isn’t working on T-Rank this morning, which includes shooting stats and such. We must press on. The entire team is made up of god shooters, Momcilovic is an excellent 3-point shooter, but Jones and Ward are even better and primarily inside guys. Lipsey and Gilbert are terrific passers and are also the high usage players.

3. How They Match Up. There are concerns about whether or not Warren Washington will be able to go. McCasland said that he’s dealing with a foot thing, he’s encouraged and I don’t know if this is one of those games where if you leave him out, then I think your chances of win decrease significantly. Iowa State scores really well inside and having Warren anchor the defense is key. Iowa State is so good defensively and Texas Tech isn’t a turnover team, 96th overall, but you can probably expect more turnovers than normal being on the road. Maybe the antidote is to force the Cyclones into more turnovers as well.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

Texas Tech is set to play its 25th game of the season and will look to top a Top-10 for the second time this week when it travels to play No. 10 Iowa State at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

“We are really excited about going to Iowa State to play,” Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for what T.J. Otzelberger is doing with their team. They are super physical defensively, they play extremely hard, they share the ball, just a great team. A great collection of athletes who are great basketball players. That’s a tough combination and a reason why they’re leading the conference. Their environment is special so we’ll have to play our best basketball to win.”
