Texas Tech Football Notebook: McGuire Talks Second Scrimmage

This was an action packed non-transcript. Just so many names dropped. If you don’t have a decent idea as to who the starters are after this, I don’t know what to tell you. Texas Tech football held their 2nd scrimmage of the spring and head coach Joey McGuire spoke after practice. He discussed injuries, starters, and how the spring game would go, which is detailed a bit below.

And in a bit of somber news, from Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams, former Texas Tech football coach Steve Sloan died at the age of 79. Condolences to the family and rest in peace.

  • Really excited, thought that Saturday was a good practice. Tuesday was one of the most physical practices we’ve had, I actually had to kick the defense off the field. Off of that practice, we’re stacking practices. Depth shows up on defense. I don’t know if you remember the Dolphins, the No Name Defense, we’re almost too deep, doesn’t matter who is out there, there will be guys come out Amier Washington and Braylon Rigsby.
  • Cameran Brown showed mobility in the pocket, he would have had a touchdown on speed option. Touchdowns for Josh Kelly and Coy Eakin. We went into scenarios, had an Oregon, Baylor and Houston scenario, we ended with 2 minute drill. Kicked field goals, Gino [Garcia] and Reese [Burkhardt] are doing good jobs, Stone [Harrington] had a good field goal. First time to go after the punter, Jack Burgess does a good job with conventional, with rugby he really booms it.
  • [On quarterbacks] Since Behren has been out, has gone 1’s, 2’s and 3’s through the spring, Jake starts, could be Cam with the 2’s and they just rotate. Cam started with the 1’s today, coming into today, taking 7 on 7 and any compete reps, over 300 attempts, he was over 70% completion percentage, he’s having a good spring.
  • [On Cameran Brown] His biggest deal is putting air under the ball, he puts the ball out quickly. Spend a lot of time in May and June and putting into work, he sometimes gets his front leg locked, but his accuracy is good.
  • We’re really lucky to have Caleb Rogers, the only position he hasn’t played this spring is right tackle. Today he started at left guard, Sterling [Porcher] at LT, Caleb at LG, Sheridan [Wilson] at C, [Davion] Carter at RG, [Ty] Buchanan at RT. Vinny [Sciury] went to LG, Caleb went to RG, tackles were the same. Caleb allows us to have depth. I really want him to play inside, I feel good about Sterling and Ty at tackle.
  • Sheridan and Carter are looking really good, Sheridan looks more comfortable because that’s what he’s played and Carter at RG, but Carter wants to be a coach and very intelligent, does a great job making line calls he just has to get comfortable, and like for it to be the center because he sets the rhythm.
  • [On if he will be active in the transfer portal] I hope I’m not active at all, there’s always, next Saturday, but would love to take this team into camp and play the season. Depth wise we’ve created a lot of depth, Joseph Adedire is only doing indy, and Isaac Smith. Chapman Lewis tweaked his knee, don’t have Jalin Conyers and Micah Hudson on offense. But the world we live in, teams in the Sweet 16, guys were in the portal right after the game.
  • [On scholarships available] We are right on the bubble, I always look, if those guys leave, is there somebody on the roster that gets the scholarship, it’s different in December. Maybe 84 or 86.
  • [On the south end zone] It’s an adjustment, but we walk out the back door and don’t have to bus anywhere. It’s still nice to have the stuff we have. Over the last 3 weeks, we’ve had some of the best in the country, when this thing is done, our fanbase is going to be in shock how beautiful it is and almost overwhelming in the south end zone, going to be loucher than it’s ever been. It’s going to help us, says a lot about our administration and alumni, when you have a $250 million project being built.
  • I think defensively, looking at a large group, only talking DB [De’Braylon Carroll] and [James] Hansen haven’t been through a spring ball, and Devynn Cromwell. We’re carrying more volume right now than i nthe past. Offensively up front htere are new faces, but the running backs and Tharp has had a great spring. All of the new is on the offensive side of the ball. [Caleb] Douglas, [Josh] Kelly, Sterling [Porcher], [Johncarlos] Miller, they’ve played a lot of football.
  • Hansen had a good calf spring, maybe put him out 4 weeks. Training with the strength staff. Look at timetable, if we played a game on July 1st, we’d have everybody. Some guys in June are almost there like Micah and Behren, but July everyone is voluntary and they are running the show.
  • Right now, hopefully Tuesday it will be Team Tahj vs. Team Behren, one head coach is DeRuyter and and Kittley is the other. Juice will call and Cochran will call offense. Yates and Bookbinder will call the other. From strength staff to recruiting to nutrition, we’ve split teams. We’ll have a running clock, think it will be black vs. white jerseys. I think everybody is split, maybe Wednesday or Thursday, Clay [McGuire] said they did it before at USC. We had done that all spring and Kittley and DeRuyter have called the 1’s, Juice and Yates called the 2’s, Cochran and Bookbinder has called the 3’s. keep everyone engaged, have young coaches get experience.
  • Chapman Lewis and everybody that went today, DB Carroll had a pec strain, but he’ll be fine. Thursday we’ll split the teams and let them practice.
  • Safety [Jordan] Sanford has been with the 1’s, [Javeon] Wilcox has been with the 2’s want to keep him at Boundary behind CJ [Baskerville] and let him and Marcus [Ramon-Edwards] battle it out. [Joseph] Plunk had a pick, he can play anything he’s so smart.
  • Star has been BJ and AJ [McCarty] and Chief [Collins] with the 3’s. Have a lot of depth, have 3 of the most athletic safeties coming in, if you look at J’Koby Williams, Malik Esquerra, Peyton Morgan, Williams went 13.8 in 100m hurdles at an area track meet. The two big ends wanted to play basketball, Miles had a chance to win a state championship, Malik does, Yates does a great job of getting guys ready.
  • Micah Hudson, Behren, and Jaylin are expected to be cleared the 1st of July. Micah is fired up and ready to move around. Getting closer to running. Conyer got off his scooter and walking around. Going to be good to have those guys back.
  • They are definitely one of us, a good group. So many good people. Sterling is really athletic good job in pass pro. Vinny is really good at contact. Mo [Maurice Rodriques] is a big body and is doing a good job, hasn’t played a lot of football, he’s doing good job, really pleased. Carter is very intelligent, reminds me a lot of Rabbit, reason he is moving up the draft boards, when you sit down with Carter he has a high IQ. Caleb helps us because of his personality he brings that room together and been happy with tight ends.
  • [Johncarlos] Miller, that’s my guy, his mom’s birthday was last week. Good to have her out here. Talking about the distance, at some point you’re going to have to grow, he loves Texas Tech and his teammates, he’s never been this far from home. Not for me, but my son, I saw him every day until he’s 21 years old and then he’s in Carolina. I remind him it is easy to facetime and tell them you miss them and he’s grateful of the things at Texas Tech and talking about gratitude it is different. Being away from home is an adjustment. Football field is our sanctuary, and you get to be with your brothers. Enjoy life. Tough things are happening to everyone in their lives. He’s special and when Jaylin gets back, that’s a fun room. Don’t have to figure out where they are at. They are sitting in that room and bs’ing 30 minutes before meetings. They know that they are all in there talking about life.
  • Interior defensive line, Kirby and I were talking about that. In year 1, Jalin and Tony had to play outrageous snaps, 700 snaps, our guys were playing 200 snaps more, but was the depth. We start tomorrow it will be Qincy [Ledet] and Dooda [E’Maurion Banks], then Trey McAlpine, DB Carroll, James Hansen. Jayden Cofield, made a play. [Braylon] Rigsby is progressing on explosive on pass rush. We have 7, maybe 4 or 5. We’ve never had that. That’s the thing about defense. Inside linebacker, it’s [Ben] Roberts and [Jacob] Rodriguez, then [John] Curry and [Bryce] Ramirez. Plus [Miquel] Dingle. Outside linebackers it’s Adedire, [Isaac] Smith, [Charles] Esters, [Harvey] Dyson, [Dylan] Spencer, [Amier] Washington. We’ve never had that. It’s going to be overwhelm people with how fresh we are.

Neither Behren Morton, nor Tahj Brooks will play in the spring game, so they are doing a Team Behren vs. Team Tahj. As detailed above, they are even splitting the coaching staff with DeRuyter the head coach of one team and Kittley the head coach of the other and Cochran and Johnson will call plays while Yates and Bookbinder will call defenses (one of them will be on each team). This sounds like a really fun concept and a cool way to mix things up a bit.

A huge weekend for Ludvig Aberg who finished 2nd at the Masters. What a huge accomplishment. Baseball ended up dropping the series to TCU, a 4-2 loss on Sunday. Softball ended up taking the series on Sunday, 4-2 over a ranked Kansas.
