Texas Tech Football Notebook: DeRuyter and Kittley Ready for Spring Game

Two videos and this took some time. As an aside, the reason why this takes so long is to double-check the roster and fill in the gaps with the player names. As always, this is a non-transcript and not actual quotes. Just me typing as quickly as possible.

Defensive Coordinator Tim DeRuyter

  • Every year you have to replace and then develop guys, our system has done a good job up front, our young guys are really starting to step up and you have to have depth to play and we feel good about that.
  • I think our corners have been much more physical, Mo Horn had a great camp, Bralyn Lux has improved, both in press coverage and tackling. When they know what to do, they can play faster.
  • [At the Star position] We’ve had great competition there, BJ [Brendan Jordan] for a true freshman did good things, there was a drop from Mud [Muddy Waters], we didn’t want him to feel comfortable, putting AJ [McCarty] there let those guys compete and have pushed both of them. Mike [Miquel Dingle] couldn’t go live, he’s a bigger star, his track times tell you he can run, his hips are loosening up and he has a chance coming into the fall.
  • Our teach tapes we have a lot of Mud on there, he could make negative yards plays, he had a great feel for it. When you first learn the position, you’re just happy to get lined up. He’s adding more nuance to his game. AJ has played and has more of a natural feel.
  • Amier [Washington] has done a nice job, he has to be much more disciplined and jumping offsides. Braylon Rigsby, he’s really flashed as an inside rusher. There are younger guys who haven’t played a lot of football, but we’re looking forward to it.
  • I look at the guys that kind of surprised us, John [Curry] is right there at the top of the list, he came in at 190 and is at 225 and maintained that. Has a good feel for the position and plays liked an experienced linebacker. He is solidly in our 2-deep.
  • We’re a work in progress, one of our goals is to establish roles, and have a solid 2 and 3 deep and we are getting closer to that. Haven’t had outside linebacker, Isaac Smith and Joesph Adiderie, but guys like Amir has shown up and gotten better. We played better in the scrimmage, save 4 plays, and our guys have to learn from that.
  • Curry has really made a step up, Jalon Peoples has really upped his game, and Mo [Maurice] Horn is playing as well as anyone on the defense. I like where Dooda [E’Maurion Banks] has dome and he’s always made progress. He comes out and he works. I think Quincy [Ledet] have done a nice job of picking up the slack from veterans who left.
  • [Devynn] Cromwell has done a nice job, but JP has been here. Devynn has a lot of raw material and a smart player. He does some things and some other things he has to work out. our 1’s and 2’s aren’t too big of a drop off.
  • Trevon McAlpine is 2 steps forward and 1 step back, probably his best spring, but Saturday was not his best scrimmage. When we got here he didn’t play as a senior and as a freshman and this was his first fall and he’s made some plays and he continues to develop.
  • [Field safety] Chapman [Lewis] got injured early, he got to play last year, I would have liked for those guys to play, but Jordan [Sanford] got a chance to run with the 1’s, I anticipate those two to compete.
  • Javeon [Wilcox], both safeties can be interchangeable, 1 is protected by space but he’s a smart football player and can play both sides. H was making a great progress but he had an injury to his teeth.
  • [CJ] Baskerville is a great leader and tackler and work ethic, he could take over that role that Rabbit did last year.
  • Feel really good with Ben Roberts and think he will been better this year. Jacob [Rodriguez], happy to redshirt him, he’s going to be a really good player. Excited for that depth, Curry and Bryce [Ramirez] and having those guys, Justin Horne has a lot of natural ability and Dingle can be that swing guy.
  • Josh Kelly is a heck of a football player and am glad he’s here when we go to Pullman. He’s been dynamite and he’s coming up with more than his share of 50/50 balls.
  • You want everyone to continue to get better. Spring games will be fairly vanilla so our fans can see, but there’s not usually a lot of growth in that scrimmage. Coach Kiffin had a dunk contest and with the transfer portal and put their guys out there and that’s the world we’re living in now. Will really see more 2’s and 3’s.
  • Harvey Dyson is going into the spring told he had to be more productive, he has been another guy who made a leap. He was playing as good as our edge guys, he’s very smart and athletic, he can play field and boundary, he acts like he’s a veteran player and playing at his fastest level and can drop.

Offensive Coordinator Zach Kittley

  • I think they are going to draft coaching staff, so whoever drafts me is who I’m rolling with.
  • I’m happy with the quarterbacks progress Jake Strong played 6 quarters who have played college football and Cameran Brown has played and Will Hammond should be in high school, really happy with them, but really good progress.
  • A lot of new faces and try to get that chemistry down and like our skill players and trying to get guys up to speed in the system.
  • Same thing, trying to get some continuity with the offensive line coach but Sheridan Wilson is one of the guys I’ve been most proud of and that’s the time they should be flashing, he’s really taken ownership. Ty Buchanan said that his last 3 practices he’s gotten better and better, he’s really show up. Caleb [Rogers] has done a good job at guard and bringing those new faces along.
  • Sheridan Wilson has done a good job, Johncarlos Miller has had a really good spring and was a true receiver at Elon. Kelby Valsin has done a really good job and caught a couple of touchdown passes. We’re young and new at some areas.
  • We’re going to have to adapt with injuries, but would like to be more like against TCU, UCF, Cal, more of in that mold and still try to get Tahj [Brooks] the ball more, and continue to find our matchups, going to continue to mix up formations and personnel groupings. Have limited Tahj this spring and see what these other backs can do.
  • [On Behren Morton] I think there’s always a concern when you don’t know everything, he looked really good in first few practices, but right now he feels good and want to make sure on August 31st he’s 100%. I talked to him and he feels good and up until that point, we decided to shut him down.
  • [Cameron] Dickey and [Cam’Ron] Valdez has continued to get better. Dickey has really made some strides, good for a guy that played high school quarterback. He is slippery and excited about him.
  • Tight ends have done a really good job, Mason [Tharp] is in the best shape of his life, he’s feeling good. Johncarlos [Miller] has made some freaky catches, Jason Llewellyn has done good and really excited about Trey Jackson, he’s done a great job and see how these guys can progress this year.
  • Two guys, Dylan Shaw was on scout team and is doing a really good job, he’ll be a redshirt freshman, Dalton Merryman has done a good job and come back from a shoulder injury, Danny Sill at right tackle, these young guys like Jacob Ponton, absolute freak and a lot of development.
  • Cam Brown is a dynamic athlete and when he escapes the pocket he makes things happen. Jake has experience and football IQ, Hammond, really excited about and huge arm and good run. Just excited about those guys and they live in the office and just glad to see how hey kick.
  • Cam can do fun stuff with him, he’s really athletic, can catch, run and throw and he’s not just a runner. He’s an athlete. He can do some fun stuff, we’ll see in the fall.
  • [On helmet communications] They are going to cut it off at 15 seconds. Typically I try to get the call in early, so you can see the defense so it will be interesting. Have been able to talk through things this spring. And play that fine line of letting them learn and think those guys are enjoying it. I loved it in the bowl game and helped us tremendously. Good for the game and love it and the quarterbacks like it. Take some of the signaling the game.
  • You’re going to do both and have formation boards, some of that is personnel and formation, but the play will go through the QB.
  • I think when you look at him [Micah Hudson] and Jaylin [Conyers], there is some good to it because you don’t have to split reps and they see the game from a different vantage point. They are getting to do more of the mental versus physical part. It is part of it and he’ll be ready to go in June.
  • Micah played outside in high school, he can play inside and outside, just getting him out here and creating competition and have been looking at that receiver board and see where he fits. Try to take some of the learning off of him as well, but being with him in June and July to get him through the system. Lot of competition with Coy [Eakin], Brady [Boyd] and CD [Caleb Douglas] and Jordan Brown and have a good probably and see where they fit and are most comfortable.
