On the Gridiron

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese on Eric Morris facing Texas Tech:

Morris reflected fondly of his connections with the Tech staff and his time as a Red Raider, but isn’t willing to make the game about himself.

“There’s going to try to be a story that it has something to do with me, when in reality it doesn’t,” Morris said. “This has everything to do with North Texas and our team here. The culture we built. The attitude, the effort that we’re playing with right now.

“We’ve got to continue to get a week better and not let this stage be too big for us. Go out there and just execute at a high level.”

Red Raider Sports’ Justin Apodaca on how he hopes to turn things around:

How does head coach Joey McGuire believe a turnaround could come for a team who failed in almost every single aspect last Saturday against Washington State? It starts defensively.

“I know nobody believes that who wears red and black and the Double T, but it has to start with us getting better on defense, and then we’ve got to take care of the football,” McGuire said.

“You’re not going to win games being 129th in the country on defense. And that’s me. I’m a defensive coach. I’m embarrassed by the way we’re playing defense. I’m sure that Tim DeRuyter is going to come in here and tell you the same thing. I know people don’t want to hear it about winning the Big 12 right now, because we just got beat the way we did, but you’re not going to win the Big 12 scoring 60 points and giving up 59 points. It doesn’t happen. It hasn’t happened.”

Red Raider Sports’ Justin Apodaca talks with Caleb Rogers on his move to left guard with the injury to Vinny Scuiry:

Rogers feels confident in the switch, and is ready to continue to be an anchor along the offensive front for the Red Raiders this season.

“I mean, I’ve played right tackle for a really long time, and so it just makes my right side a lot more comfortable. And I mean, I’ve played left a lot. I played a lot my freshman year. I played my whole junior year,” Rogers said.

“It’s just not necessarily, I guess, my most comfortable side. But at guard, it’s not as much of a switch, because your feet aren’t as staggered. So it’s really not that big of a deal going like switching left and right guard.”
