Texas Tech Football: Simmons & Platt Commit

Minnesota safety Koi Perich committed to Oregon yesterday, Perich was deciding between the Ducks and Texas Tech. The remaining safeties in the portal are pretty slim with former Iowa safety Ian Foster and former Texas A&M Bryce Anderson being the two top two that I could see with Youngstown Makai Shahid and UCLA Scooter Jackson down the list a bit.

Portal Commits: I had organized these by dates of commitment, but felt that a more traditional method of looking at this was better for me personally and since I’m doing the typing, you get this as well. The players that are in bold are the ones that committed yesterday. If you are interested in prior coverage, you can check out the football category of STP.

  • Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby (6-3/235)
  • Alabama State IR Jalen Jones (5-9/175)
  • Liberty WR Donte Lee, Jr.(6-3/185)
  • Pittsburgh WR Kenny Johnson (6-1/205)
  • Auburn WR Malcolm Simmons (6-0/186): As a sophomore, Simmons was the 3rd leading receiver with 25 receptions for 457 yards, 18.28 yards a catch, and 2 touchdowns. With anything with young players, consistency is the most difficult aspect of playnig football and that’s been Simmons’ issues. I’m not going to try to sell you that Simmons is better than Cam Coleman, but I used (and still use) CFB Depth to get an idea as to a team’s better players and they have Simmons as a slot receiver and a overall rating of 13.9, while Cam Coleman was 13.5 as an outside receiver. Again, I’m not about to sit here and tell you one is better than the other, just telling you how they have them rated and where they play.
  • Nevada TE Jett Carpenter (6-3/258)
  • Akron DL Julien Laventure (6-1/270)
  • Washington DL Bryce Butler (6-5/320)
  • Wake Forest DL Mateen Ibirogba (6-4/290)
  • San Diego State DE Trey White (6-2/255)
  • Oregon State DE Jojo Johnson (6-2/288)
  • Miami (OH) DE Adam Trick (6-4/249)
  • Kansas State LB Austin Romaine (6-2/232)
  • Houston LB Corey Platt, Jr. (6-2/215): As a sophomore last year, Platt was the 9th leading tackler for Houston with 40 total tackles last year, 5 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks, 2 passes broken up, 2 QB hurries, and 1 forced fumble. Platt was given a grade of 13.5 for CFBDepth, which was 11.4 for pass-rush, 16.5 for run defense, 14.7 for tackling and 11.4 for pass coverage and played about half of the snaps. For reference purposes, I think a score of 20.0 is a perfect grade.
  • UTSA CB Davin Martin (6-2/165)
  • SFA K Jacob Hand (5-11/170)
