Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams reports that Texas Tech is not quite ready to announced a jersey patch sponsorship, while the Galaxy field logo will be placed below the double-t in the middle of the field. Williams also reports that there may be another logo on the field.
“We’ve received significant interest,” Giovannetti said on Tuesday, “and we’re just vetting all of those. Obviously, we want to take our time and get a partner that we feel was going to be worth the long-term investment. But we don’t have anything pending right now.”
USA Today’s John Brice spoke with former UCLA and Washington head coach Rick Neuheisel about his conversation with Brendan Sorsby. Now, I know that you are tired of Sorsby news and are ready to tune out, but Neuheisel said something at the end that the vitriol wasn’t necessarily about Sorsby and gambling, but also about Texas Tech:
“The backlash was by a bunch of schools that really don’t like what’s happening at Texas Tech, which to me is you’re using big money to just basically go buy everybody else because you’ve got a couple of fellas, John Sellers and Cody Campbell, who made a billion dollars from Double Eagle Energy. Listen, we’ve had big-money donors for a long time in college football. Most of it was under the table. Now, money is over the table. There’s some jealousy, there’s some outlash, ‘We’re not playing (Tech).’ And while integrity of the game is certainly an issue, to me, it’s that he got bought by Texas Tech and Texas Tech was fighting to get him to play. Enough was enough.”
I think there is some truth to that, but I think some folks had some morality issues with Sorsby gambling on college football as a “line too far”. I also think that Texas Tech and Joey McGuire didn’t do anything wrong other than be supportive of a player that was cleared to play by a court. Neuheisel’s thought that this animosity was also just to sort of hate on Texas Tech for their ability to spend is also maybe true.
