Pretty good little athletic department. Pretty good little athletic department.

On the Diamond

Texas Tech’s Logan Hughes was picked 17th by the Houston Astros and Caden Ferraro was picked 86th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals. Kyeler Thompson was picked in the 9th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Matt Quintanar picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 16th round and Connor Shouse picked by the Seattle Mariners in the 20th round.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams has a more complete list including signee Drew Gonzalez from El Paso picked by the Yankees in the 6th round and Ryne Barker picked by the Atlanta Brave in the 11th round.

On the Gridiron

ESPN’s Craig Haubert continues to update the ESPN top recruiting classes and has Texas Tech at No. 10. I don’t think these things change that much (if at all) I think these things update when there’s movement and Texas Tech as No. 10 the previous time as well. There’s been a lot of smoke regarding Brewster and his possible flip to LSU. I don’t know about that, but I also know that Brewster has a YouTube channel and the only way to sometimes get traction and views on a new channel is to create some news because normally, the life of a high school player isn’t all that exciting. But college football fans are weird and there’s a few thousand people that want to watch Brewster work out or go on visits to schools (26k have watched the LSU visit video). That’s not tune-in content for me, but maybe it is for you. I have no idea if Brewster will stick with Texas Tech or not, but it won’t be for lack of Texas Tech willing to step up.

The coach tapped into his high school roots, pulling No. 1 overall prospect Jalen Brewster out of Cedar Hill, where McGuire was successful. The five-star is truly a “jumbo athlete” and can be a disruptive interior force. At around 6-3, 300-plus, he’s quick, explosive and agile, with the versatility to play DT, DE, even RB and Wildcat QB in high school. He carries his weight like a smaller player and wins one-on-ones with leverage, active hands and sudden get-off. He can wreak havoc against the run and pass game alike. K’Adrian Redmond adds another 6-3, 305-pound interior presence, giving the Red Raiders real size inside. DE Anthony Sweeney is another five-star pickup. He possesses elite length and good bend, displaying savvy for a young pass rusher.

Offensively, Kavian Bryant is the future at quarterback. The 6-2 dual threat fits the shift toward more athletic passers in Lubbock. He’s a dynamic playmaker who will extend plays, escape trouble and function as a designed runner, with his passing touch and accuracy continuing to trend up. On the perimeter, Benny Easter Jr. (6-0, 200) gives the Red Raiders a strong, athletic target who can work outside or in the slot and Julian Caldwell brings good speed and the ability to create after the catch.
