Non-transcript of head coach Joey McGuire after the scrimmage.
- Good scrimmage. Good to get heat on us. Straining in the heat and getting some longer drives. Thought they responded well. John Curry had an INT in the end of game scenario, Will Hammond had to throw it up because it was 4th down. Brock Gowlas had an interception late. Stone Harrington kicked a 64-yard field goal. He missed a 59-yarder, missed to the right, but was long enough. Came out healthy. Really like the competitive spirit. Defense responded, jumped on the offense, but the offense came back, Jett Carpenter caught a touchdown in red zone.
- The way Reggie Virgil and Caleb Douglas are playing, there’s no way. If Pat Mahomes wants to come back, he’s still got a year left. We are always monitoring the situation daily, through the day. We’ve benefited in basketball, they are going back to the place they played. We are always looking to make the roster better.
- Curry, Romaine, and Roberts, they sit in the front of the bus and spend a lot of time with those guys. Austin has fit in great. He’s not Jacob, but he has connected personality wise, fired up they were recognized for Butkus Award. Romaine is getting more and more comfortable.
- Jordan Church adds a different dimension, plays with an edge, that right side with Ponton. Wilson played well, Danny Sill played well. Young guys are getting baptized. The rest of the world keep talking about what we lost: Trey, Trick, Guyton, Holmes, Julian, Jojo, Mathis, Ansel, Anderson . . . you can keep naming them, they are showing up in a great way.
- Guyton did good, there were 2 guys that said that Guyton gets there in a hurry. He’s playing the edge and folds inside. We feel good. Cam Dickey and J’Koby Williams, they don’t have that type of leader, but we have Adam and Trey as leaders. Guyton is one of the first guys in the building, getting his body ready, says a lot about him.
- Back and forth in the scrimmage, tight ends and the defensive line performed really well. TC had a touchdown in red zone lockout, Jett had added one as well.
- They started out down 12-0, the defense won the first two series. They scored 2 touchdowns and a field goal. It’s a process. We had 3 pre-snap penalties, 2 were on freshmen offensive linemen and 1 was on the 3rd group and the receiver group moving. We didn’t have any pre-snap penalties with the 1’s and 2’s and that’s an emphasis. When you have 2 big tight ends and athletic receivers in Kenny, Micah and Donte Lee.
- We are in 2-back once or twice every series. J’Koby and Cam or Q were out there together. We have a lot of stuff we can do. J’Koby can do things in the slot, Jalen Jones is comparable to J’Koby from a body.
- Will had the TD to TC and Kirk to Jett.
- Paramount show has been awesome, we get to preview a lot of stuff, they have been a great partner. Some of it is painful to relive. Most professional group. All of them will be back before the Abilene Christian game. I’ve gotten to see 3 episodes, we are re-living some of the stuff we had to go through. People are going to see how much closer we got.
- We’re not going to cut anyone, I can’t imagine that. That has happened around the country and that should be a red flag to all parents. We are very fortunate, we have to get to 105 and have soem guys that won’t get to play this year and are injured for the entire year, Hendrix doesn’t count against the 105.
- Chase Campbell had a good scrimmage, playing the slot. Davin Martin, the cornerback, is starting to fit the run. Corey Platt at linebacker.
- The more that Will gets in this situation, even though he’s not getting hit, there’s a lot of trash around him and will blow the whistle on a sack. I think he’s doing a good job, he’s staying in there and moving in the pocket. The field goal was a good situation to get some points at the end of half. It is different in the stadium. I feel really good. Ramirez and Steve in the rehab, along with Will, and see the development of Hammond and he might have ended up being the starter anyway.
- I know that today, Reggie, Caleb, Bailey rushed 6 times and double-timed 3 times, Jets scout was out here today and want to thank for Bailey. Romello had a tackle, Jacob had a tackle, Tahj had some carries, Skyler didn’t play with Tahj, but sought him out for a photo and Skyler sent it to me. Behren played well. They are showing up like pros.
What’s next with Robert Giovanetti and Joey McGuire right after the scrimmage:
Cornerbacks coach Darcel McBath and safeties coach Rob Greene met with the media at the end of the week last week and here’s their short media sessions:
Red Raider Sports’ Lane Selph recaps Greene’s media scrum and McBath’s media scrum.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese on the battle at safety:
Front and center of the battle for safety No. 2 are Peyton Morgan, Oliver Miles II, and Malik Esquerra. Greene said there have been days Esquerra has “looked phenomenal” and commended Miles for his effort level. Esquerra was the primary backup to Cole Wisniewski last season, who started opposite Jordan in Texas Tech’s run to the Big 12 championship.
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde with the 25 most intriguing college football quarterbacks and at No. 5 is Will Hammond:
The Brendan Sorsby Era That Never Was at Tech will apparently default to the Hammond era, provided his surgically repaired knee is ready to go. Hammond was a highly functional backup last year to Behren Morton on a Big 12 championship team, and was in position to fill the same role behind Sorsby until the Cincinnati transfer’s gambling scandal ended his college career. The well-bankrolled Red Raiders have assembled a roster with as much talent as almost anyone in college football—but the quarterback question looms large. Tech is hopeful that Hammond will be ready for the season opener, but if need be it could win with a backup for two weeks before hosting Houston on Sept. 18.
ESPN’s David Hale ranks all 138 FBS teams by tiers with Texas Tech being in Tier 3 along with BYU, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and USC:
Tier 3 is chock full of title aspirations, but there are some legitimate questions. Can Kiffin turn things in Year 1? Can Bear Bachmeier take the next step to get BYU over the hump? Can John Mateer get ripped enough to bench-press a Ford Taurus and still sling the rock? Can Texas Tech dress Brendan Sorsby in a fake mustache and pompadour wig and add him as a mysterious new walk-on named something like Rico Fettuccini?
ESPN has their All-American team and TE Terrance Carter, Jr and CB Brice Pollock make the 1st team with RB J’Koby Williams and DT A.J. Holmes, Jr. receiving mentions.
