Youssouf made his varsity debut for Kaufman on Friday night against Greenville. He had 3 receiving touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown on the night. Kaufman won, 48-45. An interesting note is that a Tony Gotcher was inducted into the Greenville Hall of Fame. Tony apparently worked in the Garland ISD for many years, which is also the place where Toddrick Gotcher played high school. I’m sure that the last names and everything else is not a coincidence. Thus, it would be my guess that Toddrick may have witnessed (if he was there to watch his dad be inducted into the Greenville Hall of Fame) Kaufman upsetting Greenville behind a 4 touchdown performance from Youssouf Jungman. Yo would have had 5 touchdowns, but he was going for a touchdown and some kid cussed at him (the kid said “Get off the f@#$ing field”). The ref thought it was him that was Yo cussing because Yo looked back. The refs should have let the touchdown stand, but called it back to the point of the penalty and then assessed the 15 yards. I’ve been asked by numerous people how many receiving and rushing yards he had and I don’t have an answer, but it was supposedly 200+. He also kicked off once and handled kickoff return duties.

On the Diamond
Some softball players were injured in a jet ski accident I think on Friday night. All players are expected to make a full recovery. I’m not going to get into much speculation, mostly because I haven’t gone searching for a ton of specifics other than to make sure the players are okay.
On the Gridiron
Quarterback Tommy Castellanos is officially on the roster and looking to back up quarterback Will Hammond. Here’s the quote from head coach Joey McGuire:
“It has been our intention since this past December to carry six quarterbacks on our roster this season,” McGuire said. “With Tommy, we have an experienced quarterback who we believe can come in and help us win games, if needed. His athleticism is also a great trait and will let us continue to expand our offense.”
ESPN’s Bill Connelly asks who could be college football’s next first-time national champion and Texas Tech is 2nd, right behind Oregon according to Connelly.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams with his best guess as to the depth chart heading into week 1. I don’t think there are any real surprises, maybe figuring out what safety along Brenden Jordan. I’ll also be interested in that receiver rotation.
CBS Sports has their very long Big 12 preview and it’s a bit funny to read this given how TCU played over the weekend. I’m not throwing stones because bold predictions are tough with hindsight and I hate to make bold predictions because the amount of egg on my face is so much. The group collectively picked Texas Tech to win the Big 12 and here’s just a small bit:

Money is not the only factor in Lubbock, because there are examples of teams that spend millions of dollars for below-average results every season. At Texas Tech, they have successfully married the resources with recruiting and scouting efforts to build a modern power, and as we look ahead to 2026, they are among the best in the conference at multiple positions on the depth chart. CBS Sports’ Brendan Marcello on the legal wrangling between the SEC fighting the Louisiana court order that is allowing former NFL players to suit up:
For the SEC, this has turned into a direct battle against LSU. The school could roster as many as three former pros this season if the court’s order holds. On Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived Jack Pyburn, who led the NFL in preseason sacks. He’s expected to sign with LSU if no other team picks him up.
Pyburn would be the fourth plaintiff in the Louisiana case intending to enroll at LSU and play this season. Dae’Quan Wright, the former Ole Miss tight end waived by the Browns, and Zxavian Harris, the 6-foot-8 defensive tackle who started all 15 games for Ole Miss last season before signing with the Saints, intend to follow coach Lane Kiffin to Baton Rouge. Former Notre Dame pass rusher Junior Tuihalamaka, who did not sign a professional contract, committed Aug. 21 after gaining a fifth year of eligibility.
Desert News’ Jeff Call (Desert News is an Utah newspaper) about how will Hammond grew up wanting to play for BYU, but will lead Texas Tech:
With the Red Raiders clinging to a 13-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Hammond engineered three-straight touchdown drives, including a pair of TD passes. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound gunslinger threw for 169 yards and rushed for 61 more.
“It was so fun to watch him come off the bench and not break stride and absolutely run and throw and outwork Utah’s defense to such a successful degree,” recalled Marshall Hammond, who resides in Austin, Texas. “Will had a couple of runs that were crazy. Countless passes that tore up the defense. It was a massive family affair. It was so fun to watch with the cross-section of my dearest friends and family who enjoy football. It was an absolute highlight of my life to watch the University of Utah go down to my son’s team.”
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese on DE Adam Trick, who plays for his brother who plassed away in June of 2025:
“The one thing I want to do is use football as a platform,” Trick said. “The more success I’m having, the bigger platform I can have and just share things about men’s mental health, suicide prevention.
“Just speak up that it’s OK to not feel right, or feel OK. I encourage anyone who feels that way to speak up and talk to someone you love and just let them know you’re having those thoughts.”
