The Lady Raiders (9-7, 0-5 Big12) lost the fifth Big12 Conference game of the season against the TCU Horned Frogs (11-5,3-2) on Wednesday, Jan 13, 2016. For the second time this season, Tech scored under 50 points. The Lady Raiders could not get on the board and they let TCU get 6 points but seemed to get back in the swing of things and ended the 1st Qtr with a one point lead 17-16. But as the pattern has been this season, the Lady Raiders allowed the Horned Frogs to go on a 13-0 run in the 2nd Qtr. The 3rd Qtr saw similar scoring and the 4th Qtr saw Tech match basket for basket with TCU but the damage was already done. Final score: Tech 48, TCU 69.
The Lady Raiders need to find a way to get out of this pattern of strong in the beginning and the end of the games but lack of scoring and teamwork and defense in the middle. Tech cannot keep having FG% in the 30% range if they are to win any game this season. While the overall stats for this season do not look bad for the Lady Raiders, the stats for Big12 games do not show a good picture. Tech is last in Scoring Defense at 76.2 and the Scoring Margin is -19.8. Tech is also in the 10th spot for FT% at 56.2%, 3-Pt% (26.7%), Blocked Shots (3.0 ppg) and Steals (5.4 ppg).
The Lady Raiders need to get back to basics and concentrate on their shot attempts and make assists and be more aggressive on the defensive side and get more steals and blocks. They need to improve on their free-throws. I knew it would be a tough season but this is not the team I thought we would see on the court.
Head Coach Candi Whitaker in the post-game presser:
Opening Statement:
“I felt like we were getting good shots at times and just weren’t getting them to go [in]. [TCU was] obviously making plays and getting it inside, and they went on a run that we didn’t counter.”
On transitions:
“[TCU] pounded it inside. They had some good transition defense. There were a lot of ways they got points in the paint.”
On TCU’s offense:
“I thought they did a good job of getting it inside and having multiple people hitting shots. We definitely did a good job of taking their three away. I think it came down to us not putting the ball in the hole.”
The sixth Big12 Conference game of the season brings the Lady Raiders home to the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock today. Tech goes up against the Iowa Cyclones Iowa State Cyclones (11-4, 3-1 Big12) at 2pm CST. If Tech is to get out of their slump, this is the game they need to do it. The Lady Raiders need to keep Iowa State’s Seanna Johnson in check. Johnson is tied for fourth in the nation in double-doubles this season with 11 and first among Big 12 players. Tech needs to control the game-flow and not let Bridget Carleton or Jadda Buckley get open for any 3-Ptrs. They are respectively 39.2% and 36.4% accurate on the arch. The Lady Raiders need to do their best to play a clean game as the Cyclones are very accurate at the charity-stripe (70.5% FT%). Where Tech might be able to make up some ground is making 3-Pointers, as Iowa State can make the 3-Ptrs but are poor in defending them (35.4% 3-Pt Defense). The Lady Raiders need to be aggressive on the boards and in-the-paint. If Tech can play well all four quarters, they have a shot of beating Iowa State. Texas Tech is currently in 9th place and Iowa State is in 3rd place in the Big12 Standings. The Lady Raiders split the games last season with the Cyclones each taking home the win on their home courts.
Focus on the game at hand
Get the Win ….. Wreck’Em !!!!
Improvement is the word this season.
