Gibbs Signs 2-Year Extension. Well, a lot happened since the report surfaced on Wednesday that Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards was targeting David Gibbs as the ASU defensive coordinator. Last night, Gibbs signed an extension with Texas Tech throuh the 2019 season. Gibbs received a raise of $100,000 and the press release specifically states that this is 6th in the Big 12 assistant coaches, perhaps a callback to the idea that Texas Tech is the lowest paying program for assistant coaches. Gibbs said in yesterday’s press conference, there is lots of work to be done:

“There isn’t a better person to work for than Kliff Kingsbury, and I’m looking forward to continue building this program with him,” Gibbs said. “There is still plenty of work that needs to be done, but I’m excited about the future of our team.”

Hocutt’s Contract to Be Extended. The press release yesterday also mentioned that Texas Tech wanted to modify Kirby Hocutt’s contract. A-J Media’s Don Williams tweeted that Hocutt’s current contract is 7 years at $7.525 million as of August of 2016 and most likely, his current deal will increase those dollars and years. It is thought that Arizona, Tennessee, Nebraska, and Arkansas all checked into see if Hocutt would be interested in their open AD positions. A-J Media’s Karen Michael reported from yesterday’s Board of Regents meeting where Gibbs’ contract was approved, that Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec is also authorized to execute a new employment contract with Hocutt, those terms of Hocutt’s contract were not released, otherwise I’d have a completely separate post for that. the one interesting note is that FootballScoop tweeted that, “Hear he has his sights on an interesting position down the line…” I don’t know what that means and I hate to speculate (but I will in just a second). FootballScoop didn’t offer any other clues. If anything, I’d guess that Hocutt has his sights set on maybe being the Big 12 Commissioner at some point. Bowlsby’s contract goes through the 2024-25 season. Again, this is total speculation on my part and 2024 is a long ways away.

Dorsey Adjusts. A-J Media’s Carlos Silva, Jr. writes about how safety Vaughnte Dorsey has adjusted this year to Big 12 play:

“Just being able to go back and do a lot of film study, really apply myself those weeks,” Dorsey said of what he learned from his injury and his recovery process. “I feel like just being able to apply yourself and working with the coaches and constantly getting film helps.”

Tech (6-6) qualified for the postseason with a 27-23 victory at Texas in the regular-season finale. Dorsey was a key contributor in that victory with five tackles and forced a fumble.

“I feel like extra work is always great,” Dorsey said of making a bowl game. “Just for us to be able to sit here, at this point in time, whereas some other teams have gone home, it’s great. More football for us.”

Media Availability. RedRaiderSports’ Brandon Soliz recaps the media availability yesterday with DE Eli Howard, S Vaughnte Dorsey, WR Dylan Cantrell and QB Nic Shimonek. Shimonek said that Jett Duffey and McLane Carter are currently splitting reps, while Howard said that Noah Jones has been batting dow a bunch of passes.
