Koontz was originally committed to PItt before decommitting in early October. Koontz visited TCU last week and then arrived in Lubbock on Friday. Koontz visited with RedRaiderSports’ Matt Clare who said that the opportunity with TExas Tech was too much to pass up:

“I had a meeting with the head coach, Matt Wells,” Koontz said. “I feel like he’s a a really good guy and I really feel like he is going to turn things around at Texas Tech. He is very family oriented and I like his direction for the program moving forward.

“After meeting with him, I just saw the opportunity at Texas Tech and it was really hard to pass up. Not many schools use the tight end like this staff does, and they just had an All-American tight end at Utah State this past season who is going into the NFL Draft.”

Koontz is a big athletic kid and I’ll just say this once, but I’ll never understand why Kingsbury didn’t continue to recruit tight ends. He seemed content to just let the chips fall where they may, but having a tight end like this would have been pretty terrific.

As a pass catcher . . . Koontz can play. As a run blocker . . . yeah, he’s just fine. I think Koontz is already a truly versatile pass catcher that is already at the size and strength you need to fully implement that position on a full time basis. I think Koontz will play pretty quickly and I think he’s already a better blocker or at least as good as anyone currently on the roster. This is a good get and I think this makes the offense better immediately.
