Leading Off

Last Non-Game Day Friday. Well, there is football this Saturday and there will be a College Football Open Thread at some point on Saturday morning (the first game of the year is Villanova at Colgate at 11:00 a.m. CST on CBSSN . . . yabba) and the headliner is Florida at Miami at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN and Arizona at Hawaii at 9:30 on CBSSN for those of you who want to get a preview of the Wildcats before the Red Raiders travel to Tucson.

Texas Tech Volleyball

Texas Tech Soccer

Texas Tech Defeats San Diego State, 6-1. Well, this was pretty much a tail-whipping from the get-go, Texas Tech was up 5-0 in the first half, had 10 shots in the first half, compared to just 4 for SDSU, and were on the board with just 2:44 gone from the game as Jayne Lydiatt scored on a Kirsten Davis assist, and then Lydiatt scored again about 8 minutes later. Davis would have 2 goals herself while Demi Koulizakis and Marisa Weichel each had a goal. SDSU scored on a penalty kick. I think every player subbed into the game because the list is long (box score). I’ve just posted a few goals, and I think there are two more posted on the Texas Tech Twitter.

Texas Tech Golf

Texas Tech Softball

Texas Tech Football

Coach Randolph. “We’re talking about depositing. Putting something in the bank so you can withdraw on game day.” Coach Randolph seems like a pretty terrific guy.

Dallas News Preview. DallasNews’ Scott Bell has a Texas Tech preview I think, which is where they’ve maybe compiled a lot of their offseason stuff into one post (so if you’ve skipped it, now’s the time to read it!), including 3 stars, 3 breakout candidates, 3 key questions, 3 games to watch, etc.

Bauman Named Montana State Starting QB. Via Montana Sports’ Nick Petraccione notes that redshirt freshman Casey Bauman (6-6/235) as the starting quarterback. Not a lot of experience last year, Bauman won the job over the spring and preseason camp. Obviously Bauman is a bigger quarterback, but he can run a little as well, he scored 27 touchdowns as a senior, 15 of them on the ground. Did you hear that? Yes, that’s the sound of game-week approaching.

Miscellaneous . . . LandGrant Gauntlet’s Evan Green has a best-case and worst-case for 2019 and the best case is more realistic than the DallasNews one that we looked at earlier this week (or maybe that was last week?) but the worst case is a bit fantastical and the worst case . . . CBS Sports’ Ben Kercheval has the conference preview, including most overrated and underrated teams (Texas Tech did not make either list) and I don’t know that Texas Tech is really mentioned much at all other than Texas Tech is picked as high as 6th and as low as 8th . . .
