On the Pitch

Texas Tech soccer defeated Utah in Salt Lake City yesterday afternoon behind goals by Kylie Bahr, Taylor Zdrojewski, and Kaitlyn Giametta. I typically don’t suggest that you watch highlights, but I do recommend for the 3rd goal, the inbounds pass from Raleigh Greason was a flipping beauty.

On the Hardwood

ESPN’s Jay Bilas picks his All-America teams and he’s got JT Toppin on his 2nd team.

ESPN’s Jeff Borzello ranks 67 newcomers and transfers, which include Darrion Williams and Cruz Davis along with freshman guard DaKari Spear as one of 16 sleeper newcomers:

Spear isn’t afraid to let it fly. Cracking the Red Raiders’ experienced rotation of guards Cruz Davis, Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn, Damarion Dennis and potentially Donovan Atwell won’t be easy, but Spear is plenty willing to take on a challenge. His floor spacing and defensive acumen should help him eventually find opportunities alongside scorers Darrion Williams (potentially) and JT Toppin. — Biancardi

On the Gridiron

Today’s press conferences should be pretty interesting. Full report tomorrow.

Texas Tech football fell to #13 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. This week’s opponent, Arizona, rises 3 spots to #22. The non-cowards have given Oregon State 10 votes.

It’s been a crazy weekend in the Big 12.

* BYU lost to UCF in Orlando in double-overtime.
* Utah beat Houston in SLC.
* Baylor fired head coach Dave Aranda after losing to Kansas on the road.
* TCU fired a co-offensive coordinator after losing to West Virginia at home and only putting up 20 points.

CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford summarizes the Big 12’s topsy-turvy day on the field.

ESPN’s Dave Wilson on how Texas Tech fans ended up with Colorado’s playbook:

The Honorable Bruce McFarling, a judge in the 362nd District Court of Texas, has spent more than 25 years on the bench reviewing evidence.

So, as he sat in a bar in Boulder’s Omni Interlocken Hotel before Texas Tech played Colorado recently, he was skeptical of what he was seeing. McFarling, a Red Raider, was a big Mike Leach fan. He knew the legendary tale of the Pirate “losing” a fake play script in his only appearance on the Oklahoma side of the Texas-OU rivalry and fooling the Longhorns.

Twenty or so of McFarling’s old 1980s fraternity brothers had made a trip to Boulder for an annual get together for a Red Raiders road game. When they gathered in the hotel bar, one said, “Look what I just found,” and produced a playbook of sorts for the Colorado football team tailored for the game against Texas Tech.
