Texas Tech Football Notebook: Shough Arrives on Campus

Well, I’m a bit tired, but somewhat glad that I get to slow down a bit. Really, once the December National Signing Day hits, it’s a whirlwind until basketball ends, which could be in April. At that point, I’ve got basketball, spring football, and baseball all happening at the same time and to be honest, it is a lot of things to juggle.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not happy basketball is over, but we are here.

Unfortunately, we start with some bad news. Lubbock-Cooper defensive end Kyler Jordan, who apparently grew up a Texas Tech fan and obviously from Lubbock, picked Baylor last night. I give head coach Matt Wells a pass on a lot of things, but Wells’ inability to recruit the high-level players in Lubbock is incredibly frustrating. If you are keeping score, Baylor offered Jordan on January 29th and Texas Tech offered on March 2nd. A kid that they knew was worthy of an offer that was in your backyard was offered a full month after Baylor.

Texas Tech currently has zero commits for the 2022 class.

It’s not all flat tires without a spare and a beer without fizz, Texas Tech announced that Oregon quarterback transfer Tyler Shough has signed a scholarship agreement and will be eligible immediately, meaning he’ll be able to participate in 13 of 15 spring practices. I’m guessing that this past week, the players had the week off for spring break, but thought that spring break was cancelled.

Anyway, that is really good news, I think Shough is a huge addition to the quarterback room and as of right now, my quarterback depth chart is Shough and then Donvan Smith.

Here’s head coach Matt Wells.

“We’re excited to add a quarterback with Tyler’s ability and experience to our quarterback room,” Wells said. “I’m looking forward to watching all of our quarterbacks compete this spring under coach (Sonny) Cumbie, and Tyler will only help in making that position better.”

This Brandon Bouyer-Randle “in my own words” is a good read on Bouyer-Randle, how he came up from an incredibly athletic family, is the third generation of college graduate, and what he hopes to do this year. I go back to that incident where Bouyer-Randle was wrongfully accused of that situation in a parking lot and how something that he wasn’t involved in could have had a significantly terrible impact on his life. I am supremely happy it did not.
