Texas Tech Football Notebook: Coach Rankings & Top Players

Dallas Morning News’ Brandon Nash lists the 10-6 best players on the Texas Tech roster with running back SaRodorick Thompson, offensive lineman T.J. Storment, cornerback DeMarcus Fields, safety Eric Monroe, and center Dawson Deaton. I think that’s a pretty good list, although I have my doubts about Monroe who wasn’t very good at safety, but he did play a ton. I still tend to think that Marquis Waters and Reggie Pearson might take some snaps away some of those snaps.

CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli ranks all of the college football coaches and Fornelli thinks that Wells is the 60th best coach:

Matt Wells: Wells has been heading in the wrong direction. When first hired from Utah State, he debuted at No. 43 in 2019. He dropped eight spots to No. 51 after a 4-8 debut and drops another nine following a 4-6 season. I think that’s a bit harsh (I had him at 54) considering you can make a strong argument that Tech improved last season. 2020 rank: 51 (-9)

I have not gone through the entire list, but on this list of 26-65, new Kansas coach Lance Leipold is at 35, Chris Klieman at 37, Neal Brown at 41, Steve Sarkisian at 46, and Dave Aranda at 62. I don’t know if I think too much about these sorts of lists because it is generally offseason banter and a talking point. I don’t have a problem with Wells being docked 9 spots as it is probably a “prove it” type of year.

RedRaiderSports’ Ben Golan continues his Q&A series with the incoming commits and since I’m catching up there are two, defensive lineman E’Maurion Banks and offensive lineman Jacoby Jackson. Here’s a bit from the Banks and Jackson Q&A’s, but there’s more there, so click on over.

Banks:

What was the biggest reason you picked Texas Tech?
“It was home and the coaches did a great job of getting to know me on a personal level, not just football.”

Jackson:

What are your goals for your freshman season, and overall in your Tech career?
“Freshman year I definitely want to work into the rotation and hopefully I can earn myself some starts. Overall in my career I want to win the Outland Trophy, I want to be known as one of the best players to put on that Scarlet and Black, and be an NFL draft pick.
