Setting the Big 12 Table: Week 9

Conference

TEXAS (4-3, 2-2)
@
BAYLOR (6-1, 3-1)

Date & Time: Saturday, October 30th @ 11:00 am
TV: ABC
Line: Baylor -2.5 (Opened Baylor -3.0)
Commentary: The Longhorns and Baylor were off last week so they should be a bit more well-rested. Baylor has asserted themselves as a ranked team and don’t look now but Texas Tech has 4 ranked opponents to end out the schedule. I would have previously trusted Texas on the road, but I’m a bit nervous about that at this point as Thompson was a bit uneven the last time out. Baylor has been consistently good all year long and prior to the break they were starting to find their groove. I’m guessing that with these lines, Vegas thinks that these two teams are even, save for the homefield advantage.

IOWA STATE (5-2, 3-1)
@
WEST VIRGINIA (3-4, 1-3)

Date & Time: Saturday, October 30th @ 1:00 pm
TV: Big 12/ESPN+
Line: Iowa State -7.0
Commentary: Iowa State took care of business against Oklahoma State at home, with Pump Fake Purdy passing for 300 yards and that’s a pretty significant win for ISU as they look to still attempt to win the Big 12 (along with Oklahoma State). The surprise win of the week was West Virginia absolutely drumming TCU in Ft. Worth, 29-17, on Saturday with Jarrett Doege throwing for over 250 yards and Leddie Brown running for over 100. TCU didn’t have a point in the second half. I know how that feels, not scoring points in the second half. Despite West Virginia’s nice win, I think Iowa State is highly motivated and despite playing in Morgantown, I think ISU will play extremely well.

TEXAS TECH (5-3, 2-3)
@
OKLAHOMA (8-0, 5-0)

Date & Time: Saturday, October 30th @ 2:30 pm
TV: ABC
Line: Oklahoma -17.5 (Opened Oklahoma -20.0)
Commentary: Texas Tech’s struggles on offense and allowing a running team to throw for 300 yards is concerning. Oklahoma continues to have hardly impressive wins, losing to Kansas for most of the game, but did come alive in the 4th quarter. OU didn’t have the leading passer, rusher, or receiver. Oklahoma seems to need a statement game and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least for them to absolutely do it against Texas Tech, but at this point, who they’ve been is to play down to the competition and then squeak out a win. I’ve lost quite a bit of confidence in the coaching staff to get things done. Finding a way to not be able to score just 3 points in a half is disconcerting and I also have issues with allowing nearly 300 yards from a Kansas State team that’s not adept at throwing the ball. Yes, the defense allowed less than 100 yards rushing, but it shouldn’t be an either-or proposition, which it seems to be. As an aside, Texas Tech and Oklahoma have each other this week, but then they both have Iowa State, Oklahoma State, and Baylor remaining on the schedule.

TCU (3-4, 1-3)
@
KANSAS STATE (4-3, 1-3)

Date & Time: Saturday, October 30th @ 2:30 pm
TV: ESPNU
Line: Kansas State -3.0
Commentary: TCU is reeling and I’m not sure exactly why except that maybe TCU is as played out as Texas Tech at this point. Kansas State hosting the Horned Frogs makes this a pretty easy choice for me as the 3 points certainly doesn’t seem like enough. Kansas State continued with their game plan after being down by 2 touchdowns at half and the defense adjusting to Texas Tech relatively quickly is usually a sign of a decent team that can coach. With Kansas State playing at home, the 3 points doesn’t bother me all that much. TCU losing to West Virginia at home bothers me significantly.

KANSAS (1-6, 0-4)
@
OKLAHOMA STATE (6-1, 3-1)

Date & Time: Saturday, October 30th @ 6:00 pm
TV: FS1
Line: Oklahoma State -30.0 (Opened Oklahoma State -29.5)
Commentary: Kansas played well, but I would expect the Cowboys to be on fire for this game. The Iowa State loss isn’t a bad loss and they’ll need to boost their resume a bit. I’d also think that Kansas playing on the road after being at home for a couple of weeks will wear on them a bit, I’ve always thought that bad teams tend to play poorly on the road, but more than that, Oklahoma State is just a good team. I’ll take Oklahoma State in a blowout and they’ll do so to need to prove a point.
