Game Recap

Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: Bryson Williams gets this again for me? Scoring 18 points, 7 rebounds, an assist, and 2 turnovers. I’d add that Williams really needs to focus on passing out of double or triple teams because that will happen with more frequency and be better as conference play starts.

Multi-Purpose Player of the Game: Mylik Wilson is pretty terrific and although +/- isn’t always a great stat, he was +41 for the evening when he was on the floor, scoring 7 points, dishing 5 assists, 2 rebounds, and 3 steals on the evening.

Game Notes:

  • The first half, PVAMU was really sticking with Texas Tech, making 39% of their shots including 3 of 11 from beyond the arc, but the floor dropped out from them in the second half. The strange thing is PVAMU scored more points in the 2nd half than the 1st half and they didn’t shoot that much worse, 39% in the first and 37% in the second. But the energy that was there in the first half was not there in the second. And the turnovers were worse in the 1st than in the 2nd, 13 to 8.
  • Free throws? Not great, only made 55% for the game, Wilson Chibuzo Agbo were 1 of 4. Turnovers? 16 for the evening and it got really sloppy in the second half, 10 in the 2nd.
  • Let’s get to some good things. Texas Tech played much better overall and that looked like what Texas Tech should have done to an opponent the first two games. Texas Tech was dominant on the boards again, grabbing 24 offensive rebounds and scoring 21 second chance points compared to just 2 for PVAMU. Texas Tech also dominated in points off of turnovers, 28 to just 12 for PVAMU.
  • Davion Warren continues to look really good with his shot selection, making 6 of 10, scoring 15, 2 boards, an assist, 2 steals and 2 turnovers.
  • McCullar was the other guy that scored in double-figures, scoring 12 on 4 of 9 from the floor, 7 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals and just 1 turnover.
  • Kevin Obanor is still trying to find his groove and he’s shooting well, but struggling to find his looks. His release is so danged quick and I’d be fine with him shooting more, he just looks a bit hesitant.
  • Texas Tech out-rebounded PVAMU 50 to 26, again, 24 of those were offensive rebounds.
  • Adonis Arms does a bit of everything and before the year, the advanced stats said that Arms was a really good passer and he had 5 assists last night, just 2 turnovers, 8 points, and 5 rebounds.
  • Head Coach Mark Adams: “We played consistent defense for most of the 40 minutes. I think the difference in this game was we were steady and overall pretty solid on the defensive end. We have been preaching that for that last week and a half to be more aggressive.”
  • Texas Tech’s next game is on Saturday against Incarnate Word at the South Padre Island Battle on the Beach, tip is at 4:00 pm and will also be on ESPN+.
