Starting 5

1. Stats. Preseason stats are fun, but maybe not completely meaningful at this point. The Lions aren’t supposed to be good and that would be the main takeaway here for the time being. The lineups are based on the scrimmage and guesses for TAMU-Commerce.

2. Scouting. Nearly impossible to know much about TAMU-Commerce. The easy thing to write about is th eteam. If you thought that Pop Isaacs shot the ball well, then you’re going to love Chance McMillian. Isaacs shot 38% from deep and McMillian shot 42%, that’s a decent jump. Williams should be a very good defensive rebounder and Toussaint should be a good distributor.

3. How They Match Up. Again, not a lot to tell here, but TAMU-Commerce isn’t a big team by any means and Texas Tech should hold some advantages with size and length.

4. lagniappe | something given as a bonus or extra gift.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese has a good story on why Joe Toussaint wanted a chance of scenery from West Virginia, basically as soon as he put his name in the transfer portal, Grant McCasland was the first to reach out to him, but there’s no love lost between Toussaint and West Virginia, he still cares for those people and place.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese has the Big 12 transfers expected to make an impact this basketball season, including Darrion Williams:

Williams became the first Wolf Pack player to win the Mountain West’s freshman of the year award by averaging 7.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game last year. The former Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year should have the same sort of responsibilities with the Red Raiders.

Joining Texas Tech reunites Williams with his former AAU teammate Pop Isaacs, a fellow Las Vegas kid.

Lubbock Avalanche Journal’s Nathan Giese writes about Grant McCasland’s homecoming to Texas Tech and this is worth the price of admission.

The Lady Raiders smoked UTRGV last night, 95-53.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

“They are physical and play really hard,” said McCasland of Commerce. “We’ve played against their teams in the past. They have a way of competing. I’m anticipating them being an aggressive team which will push tempo and play hard. We’ll have to share and take care of the ball in order to be good. I think our advantage will be around the rim. We’ll have to not panic and get good shots against them because I think we’ll have the opportunity to score, it’s just being able to recognize that. They’ll be a quality opponent and we anticipate a tough, physical game.”
