Post Game Thoughts: Texas Tech 73, Texas A&M-Commerce 46

Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: I’m going to zig where everyone else zags, and I’ll go with Darrion Williams who had 14 points, 7 boards, a block, a steal, and 3 turnovers.

The Motion:

  • I thought the game was much more fun in the first half than the second half. The first half had a bit more flow, but the second half seemed like it was just fraught with turnovers and sloppiness. The team shot 44% from the field and 31% from deep with 9 turnovers and in the second half, 38.5% from the field and made just 1 of 10 3-pointers with 9 turnovers. Texas Tech turned the ball over on 25.7% of their possessions.
  • The defensive effort was consistent, but TAMU-Commerce also was a terrible shooting team (no offense), hell, they were 5 of 14 for layups if that tells you anything and they just took a lot of poor shots, some of that as a result of the defense.
  • Maybe the biggest takeaway is that this team beat the Lions by 27 points with 18 turnovers, and only making 42% of their shots and 22% of 3-pointers.
  • Texas Tech had 17 fast break points, which is still a lot, they are definitely pushing the pace and finding easy buckets.
  • TAMU-Commerce only shot 1 free throw all game, while Texas Tech made an impressive 83% of free throws, 24 of 29, so that right there is the difference in the game.
  • Three players were in double-figures, Pop Isaacs made 5 of 15 for 19 points, Darrion Williams made 5 of 7 for 14 with 7 boards and Joe Toussaint had 10 on 4 of 8.
  • Darrion Williams was much bigger than I expected. I sort of envisioned a skinny small forward, thinking Zach Smith, and he wasn’t that at all. Big body and that’s a good thing. I also note that Isaacs is bigger and I always thought that last year, he sort of faded in the second half of games because he just wasn’t that big. He’s added some good weight and looks more formidable. He even backed down a defender and scored.
  • So yeah, the best news is that there’s a lot to clean up an there’s a lot of room for improvement despite beating your opponent by 27, which is more than the spread.
  • Up next? San Jose State on Sunday, November 12th at 1:00 pm at the United Supermarkets Arena.
