The Morning Stake | 2024.01.16

On Friday it was announced that edge rusher Steven Linton and offensive tackle Matt Keeler would enter the transfer portal. I’m not as worried about Linton as I am about Keeler. Losing more offensive linemen is not ideal, but but a few offensive linemen have been added in the transfer portal. We had previously talked about the transfer of former 4-star Oklahoma tight end Jason Llewellyn, former 4-star TCU defensive back Javeon Wilcox Nevada defensive tackle James Hansen, but Texas Tech also announced the addition of kicker Ethan Ballentine from Birdville and the transfer of Central Missouri receiver Price Morgan, who caught 57 passes for 538 yards and 6 touchdowns. Also, Central Missouri’s mascot is the Mules and that’s pretty great.

Dallas Morning News’ Justin Apodaca has 5 questions entering the 2024 season and here’s one of them:

How will the new-look offensive line mesh together?
Texas Tech’s offensive line will look quite different in 2024 after four starters from the 2023 campaign have either graduated or entered the transfer portal.

The pair of Western Kentucky transfers in Cole Spencer and Rusty Staats have graduated, they are joined by the fellow interior lineman Dennis Wilburn. Starting left tackle Monroe Mills entered the transfer portal and committed to Louisville while the swing guard Jacoby Jackson headed to Mississippi State.

Tech hit the portal itself in search of quality starters to help bridge the gap between the present and future as it look towards the highly touted recruits that McGuire has brought to Lubbock in the coming years.

Tech added Memphis transfer Davion Carter and Toledo transfer Vinny Scuiry to help sure up the interior position. Both were regarded as two of the top available in the transfer portal and are expected to be immediate impact players for the Red Raiders. The interior of the line will be sured up by last year’s right tackle in Caleb Rogers, who is expected to play center.

At tackle, Tech added Middle Tennessee State transfer Sterling Porcher and Saddleback CC transfer Maurice Rodriques, who chose the Red Raiders over Georgia, USC and UCLA. Porcher and Rodriques will battle with a couple upperclassmen in Dalton Merryman and Caleb Rodkey for the starting spots.

Texas Tech broke into the AP Top 25 at No. 25 with the highest vote at No. 9 by Stefan Krajisnik.

Hannah Anderson, Alex Kerr and Madison White were all drafted in the NWSL Draft on Friday with Hannah Anderson picked by Chicago at No. 31, Alex Kerr picked by Orlando at No. 50, and Madison White picked by Louisville at No. 54. Congrats!

Texas Tech received a commit from Flower Mound linebacker Brock Golwas, who is a 3-star according to Rivals. Golwas only had one other offer, that being Army and he appears to a guy that’s going to grow into being strictly an inside linebacker, with his video opening with some straight line running at quarterback, he’s got speed and a burst with some highlights playing the slot as well on a couple of plays. Golwas is the 8th member of the 2025 class.

The Lady Raiders will be at home to host No. 24 Iowa State tomorrow night, with tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and the game should be on ESPN+.
