Texas Tech baseball was picked to finish 4th in the Preseason Big 12 Baseball Poll, behind TCU, Texas, and Oklahoma State. I mentioned yesterday that TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, and Kansas State were ranked by D1 Baseball, but not Oklahoma State. And it’s another year and Iowa State doesn’t even receive a vote. Their program must stink. The entire poll is here with first place votes in parentheses.

Big 12 Baseball Preseason Poll
1. TCU (11) – 143
2. Texas (2) – 131
3. Oklahoma State – 119
4. Texas Tech – 107
5. Kansas State – 98
T6. Oklahoma – 85
T6. West Virginia – 85
8. Kansas – 67
9. Houston – 56
10. UCF – 45
11. Baylor – 36
T12. BYU – 21
T12. Cincinnati – 21

Additionally, Gavin Kash was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team. Congrats!

Texas Tech head football coach Joey McGuire named give team captains heading into the season:

  • RB Tahj Brooks
  • OL Caleb Rogers
  • QB Behren Morton
  • LB Jacob Rodriguez
  • LB Bryce Ramirez

I sort of always thought that captains were named closer to the season, but considering that you need leaders through the offseason, this makes a lot of sense. Not only that, but these captains are in charge of finding the next set of captains:

The five captains will be tasked with identifying and developing new leaders to the football program as well as enhancing Texas Tech’s player-led culture. This is the first time during McGuire’s tenure he has named set captains as he previously relied on a leadership committee of upperclassmen from each position group.

“These five individuals have earned their place as a captain within this program,” McGuire said. “As we enter the offseason, I believe it is vital that we continue to develop future leaders in our program. While these five will be our set captains for this upcoming season, my challenge to them has been to help us identify the individuals who will eventually make up a separate leadership committee that will help us continue to take this program to new heights.”

I sort of like this approach.

The Lady Raiders notched their 4th Big 12 victory on Wednesday night with Jordyn Merritt scoring 24 and 15 from Loghan Johnson. They will host TCU on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. who I had mentioned earlier this week, had to pull in 3 walk-ons and a volleyball player in order to have enough players to field a team. They won their game with this depleted team against UCF.
