Texas Tech Football

Texas Tech officially announce on Friday the hiring of Clay McGuire as the new offensive line coach.

“We are excited to welcome Clay and his family back home to Texas Tech,” Joey McGuire said. “From the onset, I was impressed by his knowledge of this offense as well as his proven ability to build and develop strong offensive lines over an extended period of time. He will only add to the culture we have established within the football program.”

Clay McGuire (no relation to Joey McGuire) returns to his alma mater following two seasons as the offensive line coach at Washington State, his second stint with the Cougars after serving in a similar capacity for six years under Mike Leach from 2012-17. Washington State transformed into one of the most-dominating offenses in the country during McGuire’s first six seasons with the Cougars, who averaged more than 30 points per game each of his last five seasons.

“My family and I couldn’t be happier to return home to Texas Tech and this football program,” Clay McGuire said. “I am extremely grateful to Coach McGuire for this opportunity and his trust in developing our offensive line. I can’t wait to meet our players, get around the staff and get to work on taking this program to new heights.”

I’m optimistic, but I don’t know what to think about McGuire. I would still sort of like to know what Stephen Hamby did to be terminated without cause and I don’t know enough about McGuire to know if this is a good a hire. I understand what people are saying, I just don’t know. This is not doubt, just uncertainty at this point.

Texas Tech Baseball

Baseball went 2-1 on the weekend with an opening night loss to No. 9 Tennessee, a 6-3 over Nebraska on Saturday, and a 11-7 wn over Oregon on Sunday. That’s a pretty successful weekend, although it would have been nice to get a win over Tennessee. Kyle Robinson took the L against Tennessee, but the bullpen was terrific. Ryan Free got the win on Saturday with the save by Parker Hutyra and Drew Woodcox, Austin Green, Owen Washburn, and TJ Pompey all had multi-hit games. In the final game, Josh Sanders got the win with Max Huffling earning the save (he is a transfer from Abilene Christian and was electric) while the offense had 13 hits led by Austin Green and Damian Bravo each with 3 hits and 4 RBI. Also of note is that Jack Washburn made his pitching debut, which we’ve waited a year for and

Here’s some highlights beating Nebraska:

They’ve got two more games in Arlington tomorrow against UTA with first-pitch at 6:00 p.m. and against No. 7 Oregon State on Wednesday with first pitch at noon.

Lady Raider Basketball

The Lady Raiders were walloped in Waco on Sunday, falling to Baylor 61-31. It doesn’t get a ton easier as they will play Texas on Wednesday in Austin and then host Cincinnati on February 24th, basically getting a week off.
