Texas Tech Football: The Offensive Line Full of Transfers

We are up to the offensive line and I am admittedly nervous of the entire situation! Texas Tech has a new offensive line coach in Clay McGuire, a long-time offensive line coach who has coached Air-Raid type offenses for years at Washington State for Mike Leach and Lincoln Riley at USC. In addition to that, Texas Tech has a new run game coordinator in Josh Cochran, who had just been the tight end coach. I’m sure this will all work out just fine with a handful of transfers filling out starting roles.

The group of super seniors should include two starters with Caleb Rogers moving from tackle to center, which is interesting. That is a move that was sort of announced after the season and with a new offensive line coach, I’m not sure how that will work, but I presume the staff is on board with it. Carter is one of the best transfers that was on the market and is almost assuredly going to start at one of the guard spots.

  • Caleb Rogers (6-5/310) | S-SR
  • Davion Carter (6-2/285) | S-SR | Memphis

Possibly a couple of more starters here. Porcher is likely a tackle, a junior college guy and then went to Middle Tennessee State (his coach left so he transferred) before arriving at Texas Tech. Sciury is likely the other starter at one of the guard spots and he was very good at Toledo, also highly rated. We are now at four starter spots and we’re through the first two sections.

  • Sterling Porcher (6-4/305) | SR | Middle Tennessee State
  • Vinny Sciury (6-3/305) | SR | Toledo

Another guy that’s thought to be the starter in the next group, with Rodriques thought of being the other starter at the other tackle spot, another transfer, but this time a junior college transfer and he was offered by USC, UCLA, Florida, Georgia and lots of other programs. So yeah, the expectation is that he’ll get the start. The rest of the group of juniors are likely back-ups and they all look like tackle prospects. Buchanan is maybe higher on the list as he’s been in the program for a while. Merryman arrived from Blinn JC and Tarleton. I can’t say I know a bunch about Rodkey.

  • Dalton Merryman (6-9/305) | JR
  • Caleb Rodkey (6-4/315) | JR
  • Ty Buchanan (6-6/310) | JR
  • Maurice Rodriques (6-7/325) | JR | Saddleback JC

This is a weird group in that I think that Wilson is a scholarship guy for sure, but don’t know about Allen and Loftin. I don’t know where Wilson is slotted, probably inside, but I’m not completely sure.

  • Tanner Allen (6-3/285) | SO
  • Jurrien Loftin (6-5/315) | SO
  • Sheridan Wilson (6-5/300) | SO

Now we are getting to the class that was recruited by this staff. Carr, Fattig and Sill were all highly rated and recruited. They are pups with a year in the system and it will be interesting to see these weights after the offseason. I think Carr was the best guy out of that class and he’s already sizable and wonder if he moves up the charts quickly and works his way into a tackle spot.

  • Kaden Carr (6-6/320) | R-FR
  • Nick Fattig (6-4/290) | R-FR
  • Dylan Shaw (6-4/310) | R-FR
  • Daniel Sill (6-5/305) | R-FR
  • Garrett Morphis (6-4/310) | R-FR

This is the freshman class and notice they are all under 300 pounds. Look above and the redshirt freshmen are all close to 300 pounds with the older guys really rounding into the shape that they will be in long-term. Davis is the jewel of the class, but I think that these are all guys that were targeted and I think they are all talented.

  • Holton Hendrix (6-4/286) | FR
  • Jackson Hildebrand (6-4/285) | FR
  • Kasen Long (6-5/262) | FR
  • Jacob Ponton (6-7/272) | FR
  • Ellis Davis (6-7/275) | FR
