The Morning Stake | 2025.05.01

We’ve been doing a ton of Morning Stakes and next week I’ll start to break down football position groups as things are maybe a bit more settled. Given the fluid nature of the transfer portal, I am bound to get something wrong, but will do my best. Also next week, I’ll do my annual Buy Me A Coffee drive, which is totally voluntary and basically a virtual tip jar if you so choose.

On the Court

Congrats to women’s tennis head coach Adam Herendeen for being named the Big 12 Coach of the Year! Additionally, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko, Avelina Sayfetdinova, Mariia Hlahola and Hailey Murphy earned honors. Congrats to all!

On the Diamond

Texas Tech baseball dropped the 2nd mid-week game 7-4 to UTRGV and we can just ignore mid-week series, right? They will hit the road to Morgantown for a 3-game series against No. 16 West Virginia this weekend.

Texas Tech softball start their final Big 12 series starting today through Saturday. Additionally, NiJaree Canady is one of 25 finalists for USA Softball’s Player of the Year.

On the Gridiron

CBS Sports’ Will Backus goes through the FCS stars that have transferred to Power Four programs and S Cole Wisniewski and OL Hunter Zambrano are both listed. Here’s the bit on Wisniewski:

There are some injury concerns with Wisniewski. He spent the entire 2024 season on the sidelines after undergoing foot surgery and missed the first seven games in 2022 while recovering from a torn Achilles. At his best, he’s a dynamic player in the secondary with the ability to impact multiple positions. He spent his first three seasons at North Dakota State as a linebacker before converting to safety in 2023 and earning consensus FCS All-American honors with 92 total tackles, eight interceptions — which led all Division I players and tied the Missouri Valley Conference single-season record — and 13 passes defended.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams and Red Raider Sports’ Jarrett Ramirez both look at way too early 2026 NFL Draft possibilities with DE David Bailey being the highest rated prospect and Lee Hunter being second for the Williams article.
