Texas Tech Football Notebook: Big 12 Media Day Players & An Update on Gonsioroski Family

I’m leading off with this story from MontanaSports’ Scott Breen, who catches us up on the Gonsioroski family. If you don’t remember, Luke Gonsioroski was a high school quarterback from Montana who committed to Texas Tech in 2017, but battled cancer in high school and lost that battle after the removal of an 8-pound tumor before his senior year. It was a tragic story in 2017 when he passed. The entire Gonsioroski family was embraced by Texas Tech, including then head coach Kliff Kingsbury, and the entire family was honored at a game. Well, life has a funny way of working out as Luke’s then 8-year old sister, Hope, is now committed and set to play for Lubbock Christian, thanks to some help from Tony Graystone, who helped Hope find a spot at LCU after originally committing to Texas Tech. Go read the whole thing and watch the video. You might feel good for the rest of the day. This is Hope when meeting Graystone at a camp during last summer:

“So, he knew who I was, ironically, and said, ‘I’ve been waiting to meet you … I’ve known who you are. I’m so glad you’re here.’ And I was like, there’s no way. And he was like, ‘Trust me, the football offices reach out to me constantly,’ and I was like, there’s no way,” she continued with a disbelieving laugh.

But there was a way. Kingsbury, who is no longer with Texas Tech, continued to advocate for Luke’s youngest sister, with encouragement also coming from current football coach Joey McGuire.

“It just goes to show you their character and how much they care for us. Luke didn’t even play football for them, and they act like we’re family,” Hope said.

And they were treated like family shortly after Luke’s passing when, at a Texas Tech football game under the lights, the school announced its Luke Gonsioroski Character Award which is a scholarship still presented annually to a high school senior who exemplifies Luke’s qualities. Adding to any irony, the Lubbock-based nonprofit is called Operation HOPE.

Texas Tech’s Big 12 Media Day is set for July 8th and the list of players that Texas Tech will bring:

QB Behren Morton
DT Lee Hunter
LB Jacob Rodriguez
S Cole Wisniewski
DE Romello Height
WR Caleb Douglas

That’s 4 defensive players and 2 offensive players. That’s also 5 transfers (Douglas transferred from Florida and Rodriguez transferred from Virginia) to Morton who has been at Texas Tech his entire career.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has their Preseason All-Texas teams, with Texas Tech official site with a breakdown of the Texas Tech players who made the cut.

CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah with the worst and best case scenario for each Big 12 team. I’ll make you click on over for the best case, but here’s the worst case:

Worst case 8-4: Many of the moves Texas Tech made were floor raisers more than ceiling raisers, and that means the “downsides” of 2025 are remarkably high. Even an underwhelming Texas Tech squad will be favored in at least eight games next year, with more possible. Depth in the trenches should guarantee at least competence.

J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey!
