On Sunday morning, I mentioned that I was able to watch a good chunk of a Southern Assault game with Lucai Anderson, Christian Anderson’s little brother. I said I’d give my non-professional scouting report when there was a player commitment so here we are!
- Lucai is a legitimate 6’4″ and I remember when Christian showed up at Texas Tech and Lucai is already more filled out than Christian probably is now. Christian is said to be 6’2″ and I’ve never seen him in person, but Lucai appears to be a bigger player already. Watching Lucai, you can tell he just got back from Europe and he was working the offense and he struggled a bit sort of early because that’s not how club basketball works. Regardless, he figured things out and he’s got a really smooth stroke. He’s a lefty. He’s not necessarily ready to go battle underneath, but he has the body to do so if he wanted to. I think that he is going to be a really good player as part of the 2027 class. Having not seen a ton of other players, he’s going to be highly regarded. He looks the part and he’s a hella smooth offensive player with a terrific shot.
- Needed to also note that Leon Horner committed to Jacksonville State. Go get ’em!
- One other note, there was a guy who played for Wyoming and his name was Fennis Dembo. I immediately recalled that when Texas Tech was maybe getting a commit with the last name Dennis and it made me think of Fennis. Anyway, if you know what happened to Fennis Dembo is (originally from San Antonio, he killed somebody, and works for the water department), then ESPN has you covered.
Player: Damarion Dennis
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 166
Transferring From: Wyoming Cowboys
Years Remaining: 2
Hometown: San Antonio, TX
Stats: 23.9 minutes; 11.2 points; 52% FG%; 34% 3P%; 86% FT%; 3.2 rebounds; 1.3 assists; 0.3 blocks; 0.8 steals; 0.6 turnovers
Dennis is a very good offensive player and the key to all of this is that he played just 58% of minutes last year. As a freshman at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, he was only playing about 45%. Overall BPM, Dennis was 6.3, which is very good, but that largely is a result of his OBPM, which is 5.3, while his defense is passable, 1.0 DBPM. Christian Anderson and Donovan Atwell were above an 8, while Jaylen Petty had a BPM of 3.2. The offensive rating is 131.2, which if you need a comparison, Anderson was 123.1 and Atwell was 142.0. Dennis can largely thank his overall shooting, 58.5 eFG%, a result of 63% 2-point shooting and 34% 3-point shooting. Dennis is a low-turnover player and low-usage player, which means he’s just making shots without the ball in his hands. And he’s not getting to the line very much, just a 27% free throw rate, which is pretty low.
Dennis is a scoring guard and saying that he can play both guards spots is not really accurate. He’s not a point guard and isn’t accustomed to setting people up really at all, but he’s a guard and can probably dribble better than a forward, but he has an 11.9% assist rate, which is low.
Also, I’m writing all of this without having seen Dennis play. I found a few Wyoming highlights, but nothing just about him. And when the Cowboys visited Texas Tech, Dennis only scored 2 points in 15 minutes
