On the Diamond: Texas Tech Softball Advances to Women’s College World Series

Game #1 Info: 5/22 @ 10:00 a.m. on ESPN2
Final Score: Texas Tech 10, Florida 8
Links: Recap | Box score
Key Pitchers: Kaitlyn Terry 5.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO; Nijaree Canady 2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 SO
Key Hitters: Mia Williams 2-3, 1HR, 1 R, 3 RBI; Lauren Allred 3-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 4 RBI; Lagi Quiroga 2-2, 1 HR, 3 R, 2 RBI; Hailey Toney 1-4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI

So many big moments, from Lauren Allred getting things started with a homer, or Lagi Quiroga absolutely hitting the shit out of the ball over the sign where her own graphic was being displayed or Mia Williams taking the cover off the ball and hitting it over a shed where she started playing softball. Pick any of those moments and they were all huge.

Game #2 Info: 5/23 @ 11:30 p.m. on ABC
Final Score: Florida 10, Texas Tech 2

Key Pitchers: Nijaree Canady 3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO; Samantha Lincoln 3.1 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO
Key Hitters: Mihyia Davis 2-4, 1 R; Taylor Pannell 1-3, Kaitlyn Terry 1-4; Lauren Allred 1-3

The bad news is that Texas Tech was pretty well clobbered for this game. The good news is that Florida used their best pitcher for all 7 innings and so she shouldn’t be available today, but you know how those things go. On offense, Allred had the only hit for a double or further and it was a double.

Game #3 Info: 5/24 @ 11:00 a.m. on ESPNU
Final Score: Texas Tech 16, Florida 7

Key Pitchers: Kaitlyn Terry 2.0 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO; Nijaree Canady 3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO
Key Hitters: Jackie Lis 3-3, 2 HR, 4 R, 5 RBI; Taylor Pannell 2-3, 2 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI; Mia Williams 1-3, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI; Jasmyn Burns 1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI

To be run-ruled at home. Ain’t that something / smacks gum / Texas Tech women’s softball team is heading back to the Women’s College World Series after downing Florida in Gainesville. I didn’t get to see a lick of any of the action (I was in Bryan for basketball with Yo), but it was clear that the Texas Tech offense was superior to Florida’s and the saying, “Chicks dig the long ball” may be more true of this team given their propensity to hit the ball out of the yard than anything I’ve seen. Making this even more sweet is that Mia Williams played for Florida last year, she is the daughter of Jason “White Chocolate” Williams, who is a Florida alum himself. Mia was hit by pitch 5 separate times during this series and that was likely a very timely coincidence or nothing at all. The 5th time yesterday resulted in Jasmyn Burns telling the Florida pitcher “F*@% You”.

If you have the means, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese on the win over Florida is delightful:

It could’ve been over there but, after Florida head coach Tim Walton was ejected in the fifth inning, his players refused to gather up for the customary handshake line with the Red Raiders. It’s a tradition that, frankly, has run its course, but the message was clear.

You may have beaten us, humiliated us on our home field, but we still don’t like you.

Talking about that sort of animosity and experiencing it firsthand are two different things. The SEC collusion to keep Texas Tech off the schedule was done in the shadows, behind closed doors, away from the players’ eyes and ears. Most of the mudslinging was done through anonymous sources. It’s hard to get a firm grasp on what it really means until it gets brought to your face.
