Trying to Answer Some Questions About the Galaxy and Texas Tech Naming Rights Deal

I have questions and I am sure you have questions as well. When I posted the news about the Texas Tech and Galaxy deal, I really just copied what was on the press release. Now that it has been a day, I thought I’d go ahead and try to figure out what Galaxy is because I have no clue.

After the news came out, athletic director Kirby Hocutt spoke to the media.

What happens to the name “Jones”?

In the presser Hocutt said that they are still working on honoring the name Clifford B. Jones, who was the third president of Texas Tech, from 1939 to 1944. They haven’t decided yet exactly what part will be named after Jones.

What is Galaxy? I am way out of my lane in trying to describe exactly what Galaxy is, but based on the About page, Galaxy does 3 things:

  1. Global Markets – Institutional access to a comprehensive suite of digital asset products and services
  2. Asset Management & Infrastructure Solutions – Delivering high-conviction investment solutions and bringing our world on-chain
  3. Data Centers – Cutting-edge AI and high-performance computing infrastructure

All of this makes zero sense to me, other than I do know what a data center is and I do have an understanding of crypto. After that, I’m useless.

What’s the connection to Texas Tech?

Galaxy is centered in New York City, but has a data center called Helios in Dickens County and consists of 1,500+ acres. It is near Spur, Texas. Based on Google Maps it appears that the data center was annexed as part of the city? That’s a question because I’m not sure that’s the data center, just south of town, and I’m not sure that Google really knows what is part of the city and what is not.

What is the actual legal name for Galaxy?

I believe it is Galaxy Digital Inc and the ticker symbol on NASDAQ is GLXY.

This question came up on the Google Finance page, “How will the Texas Tech stadium naming rights agreement impact Galaxy Digital?” and here’s the AI answer.

The 15-year, reported $75 million stadium naming rights agreement between Texas Tech University and Galaxy Digital Inc (NASDAQ:GLXY) impacts the company across several strategic areas:

  • Brand Visibility and Credibility: The rebranding of the home of Red Raider Football to Galaxy Stadium (beginning with the 2026 season) significantly enhances corporate visibility.
  • Mainstream sports integration supports Galaxy’s continuing business transition from pure crypto trading to institutional AI and high-performance computing (HPC) data infrastructure.
  • Local Synergies & Workforce Pipeline: The partnership expands Galaxy’s footprint in West Texas, anchoring it to its massive Helios data center campus located 60 miles east of Lubbock in Dickens County (which holds 1.6 gigawatts of approved capacity).
  • The agreement leverages Texas Tech as a primary talent pipeline for high-performance computing and data science roles.
  • NIL & Community Integration: By becoming the official data center and digital assets partner of Texas Tech Athletics, Galaxy will collaborate on student-athlete Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, commercial branding campaigns, and campus-wide artificial intelligence initiatives.
