California opened their season losing 2 of 3 from Duke in Durham, and then coming back home and sweeping Purdue, while winning a mid-week game against San Francisco and losing to Michigan. Then, last weekend, the Golden Bears swept Texas, in Austin, in a 4-game series. That 4-game sweep of Texas on the road should maybe tell us what to think about Texas Tech in terms of how they’ll compete in the Big 12.

Texas Tech is set to start the longest roadtrip of the season, starting with these four games, then a game at Globe Life Park against UT-Arlington and then the Red Raiders are in Waco to open the Big 12 season. The sample size is small thus far, but from my end of thins, I think that Texas Tech has a good pitching staff, it’s deep and has a decent bullpen, but there is no ace. Last year, this team could depend on Corey Taylor and Dominic Moreno or Cameron Smith for a good win and I don’t know that this team has that sort of pitcher. It should also be noted that Ty Damron and Ryan Moseley have already been pulled as starters and head coach Tim Tadlock is going to four true freshmen, Davis Martin, who had previously just pitched in relief, Steven Gingery, another true freshman who had a terrific outling last time out, Erikson Lanning, from Georgia, and Ty Harpenau, a true freshman from Arkansas.

The lineup probably won’t change all that much, but this is a signifiant change for the pitchers.
