The Player Speaks: We’ve got quotes from two sources, so good for you all, as Wreck’Em 24/7’s Michael LaBarre talked to Johnson after his commitment:

“Well honestly, I felt real comfortable about Tech,” Johnson said. “I like the way they can get me the ball. I like that they throw it. I love coach Jones. I like his enthusiasm towards the game and how he likes his players and how he feels about them.”

And also, Red Raider Sports’ Will McKay talked about his relationship with wide receivers coach Emmett Jones:

“I love the game, and I know he loves the game,” Johnson said. “He’s wise at the receiver position. He knows a lot about it, and I want to know a lot about it. So, for a person like myself with some edge and hype, I want a coach with that same type of mentality that I have. I want them to have the same mindset going into a game.”

Scouting Report: Johnson is so much bigger than his mates and his current pattern of choice is run down the field and catch the ball. It works great and he’s quite adept at some of the more complicated things, like jumping up over defenders and fighting for the ball in space. Those are some pretty advanced things for just a sophomore. He’s got really nice size and does a nice job of just running over defenders. He also runs with the idea of punishing defenders, which I like and on a couple of those passes, he does a really nice job of coming back to the receiver. Giddings loves to love run that tunnel screen with him and that quick hand-off while h’es in motion. Johnson does a nice job of fighting through traffic on those jet sweeps.

It’s awfully early for a sophomore to commit, but might as well get that 2018 train started now. With this being Johnson’s very first offer, there’s a chance he’ll change his mind, but it’s clear that Emmett Jones made an impression on Johnson and that’s a good thing.

Make sure and check out Staking The Plains’ Recruiting Table for a map of where all the commits are located and links on every commit.

Treveon, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
