Recruiting on the Plains: QB McLane Carter Commits to Texas Tech

There’s a few things happening here, but first and foremost is that Texas Tech received a commitment from Tyler J.C. quarterback, McLane Carter.

Carter is originally from Gilmer, Texas, where he had at his disposal Blake Lynch. Carter put up terrific numbers as a quarterback there, 3,969 yards, 47 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. The problem with Carter is that he’s left-handed and that’s really not a problem, but it apparently was a problem for college programs as his best offer was Incarnate Word. I think he stayed there for a year and then ended up transferring to Tyler J.C. where he started and shined.

At Tyler J.C., Carter completed 58% of his passes for 3,226 yards, 358 yards a game 9.7 yards per attempt, 30 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Carter then was Most Valuable Player and Offensive MVP by the Southwest Junior College Football Conferences, named by the coaches.

After watching the video, you wonder why he wasn’t offered by more programs, other than the left-hand thing, he’s strong-armed and accurate. Carter is mobile, he can well just fine. I’d guess that his interceptions are a result of him trying something that he thought he could do that didn’t work out.

So, this leads to the speculation that this provides some insurance in case Patrick Mahomes declares for the NFL Draft, which seems like a very real possibility at this point because he’s predicted to be picked so high (at least by uninformed bloggers who like to mock draft). This would provide for Nic Shimonek to quarterback and battle with Carter for the 2017 spot, Shimonek graduates this next year and then Carter gets the reins in 2018 with Jett Duffey and Xavier Martin waiting in the wings (this also a spot to confirm that I have no idea if or what’s up with Duffey and don’t have a clue as to the rumors.
