2018 RB Stanley Hackett has decided to decommit from Texas Tech. I’m never a huge fan of these players committing so early and it’s even more strange to do profiles that end up really not mattering at all. Anyway, the Texas and Baylor fans are showing up in full force in Hackett’s mentions. And don’t look now, but Oklahoma also just offered 2018 commit WR Treveon Johnson.

Gridiron Now’s David Ubben (who doesn’t Ubben write for?) has his preseason power rankings and he has Texas Tech 8th:

The skinny: Keeping David Gibbs was the right move. Quarterback Nic Shimonek (shoutout to his tattoo sleeve, complete with a flaming skull) is an underrated talent who will keep the offense from falling off a cliff, but how bad would this team have been last year if it didn’t have arguably the best quarterback in the Big 12 running its offense? We may find out next year, and Kliff Kingsbury will feel the heat if he doesn’t get back to a bowl game. His best season is exactly as good as Mike Leach’s worst season from 2002-09, Leach’s final eight seasons in Lubbock.

ESPN’s Max Olson evaluates whether or not the Big 12 early NFL departures should have declared for the NFL Draft and Patrick Mahomes made the right call:

A second-round grade was too good to pass up for Mahomes, and surely a few NFL teams are going to fall in love with his remarkable talent and what he’s put on tape. He gave Texas Tech his all while playing through a number of injuries over the past few years. Another year of superstardom in Lubbock would’ve been fun to watch, but the feedback he’s received likely affirms he’s making a good move.

RRS’s Drew Kohnle has a recruiting notebook if you need to get caught up over the last week of events. The biggest thing is the list of visitors this weekend and next weekend. Also, Kohnle gets a bit into the Adam Beck situation, which is that Beck is definitely flirting with other schools and programs. Beck is visiting this weekend, so we’ll see what happens. Also of note is that Texas Tech is very much after edge rusher David Anenih, who is visiting the 27th.

Miscellaneous . . . via College Football Talk, the NCAA’s Board of Directors are expected to approve the addition of a 10th assistant coach so every school will be adding another assistant coach soon . . . NFL’s Bucky Brooks ranks the top five potential draftees at each position and has Patrick Mahomes at 5th overall . . .
