The Morning Stake: January 24th

Just an FYI, the commenting system that we use is called Disqus and about 6 months ago I was able to change the settings so that there would be no advertising showing at all. However, I received an email from Disqus stating that they’ll continue to offer a free version, but it will cost me (STP) $10 per month. So, I’m not going to pay the $10 for now. We’ll see how things go and how obnoxious the ads are.

Gridiron Now’s David Ubben ranks the Big 12 quarterbacks heading into the season and has Nic Shimonek at #8:

The skinny: The Red Raiders’ staff likes Nic Shimonek, and he helped rally the Red Raiders in a blowout win over Kansas in his only meaningful snaps in 2016. That doesn’t tell you much, but we know he’s at least capable and should improve with an offseason full of No. 1 reps. Still, he has thrown only 60 career passes. Pat Mahomes threw at least 59 passes in a single game three times last year.

I’ve got one hashtag for Ubben . . . #dontflinch

The always reliable Bleacher Report has a mock draft and has Patrick Mahomes going #25 to the Texans:

Mahomes has the mobility and arm strength of an Aaron Rodgers-like passer, and he’s the most talented quarterback to come out of the state of Texas since Griffin left Baylor. He’s nowhere close to starting duties in the NFL, considering his backyard style of play coming out of an Air Raid offense, but Texans head coach Bill O’Brien has won a lot of games with quarterbacks who had less potential. It’s finally time for him to draft and develop a passer for the Houston fanbase.
