Leading Off

Senior Sarah Redding has medically retired due to multiple knee injuries, but will participate with the program as a student assistant coach for her senior year (TexasTech):

“There was nothing easy about this decision,” Redding said. “It helped that I’m surrounded by my loving family and incredible coaches and trainers that fully support my decision. I have been playing in pain for two years and last year was especially brutal. I am glad I chose to gut it out through the postseason, but I knew our last game would be my last game ever. It’s very hard to give up your identity as an athlete. It’s all I’ve ever known, and I will miss competing and being a part of the team. With that said, I would not trade my collegiate volleyball experience for anything in the world, and I am so grateful to the people of Texas Tech. I look forward to my new role on the staff as I continue my education and pursue nursing school.”

Cross country head coach Jon Murray announced the schedule on Tuesday, including four meets prior to the Big 12 Championship. A meetin at Abilene Christian, then in Wisconsin, College Station and the Big 12 Championships in Ames (TexasTech).

Texas Tech Basketball

Congrats to Niem Stevenson for signing with the Leicester Riders. So happy that these guys are signing deals, playing and chasing their dreams.

Via PrepCircuit, 2019 power forward Akok Akok has a lot of interest from five schools, Syracuse, Providence, UConn, Georgetown, and Texas Tech. Texas Tech still has one scholarship available and it appears that Chris Beard is trying to fill it with the best player available. Akok played at Putnam Science, which is the same prep school that Malik Ondigo and Joshua Mballa.

RedRaiderSports’ Brandon Soliz has a story on Chris Beard’s promise to go watch Davide Moretti represent Italy in the FIBA World Championships:

“Moro, just have a lot of respect for him because he made a personal decision,” Beard said. “Moro’s on the national team of his country – Italy. Really had a decision to make this summer, go back and play for the national team. He made the decision because of the commitment here at Tech to kind of split the summer. So he was with us all of May, all of June and some of July then he’ll go play for his national team in July, which I’ll go see him play, I think in Germany this year.”

Texas Tech Football

Congrats to Dakota Allen for being named to the Bednarik Award watch list (TexasTech).

A-J Media’s Don Williams writes about the passing of Gabe Rivera and you should read about Don talking to others who remembered Rivera’s life. I did read that Texas Tech will wear a sticker on their helmet to remember Rivera’s passing.
