Yesterday, Texas Tech announced the inaugural class for the Texas Tech basketball Ring of Honor:
Rick Bullock – Men’s Basketball
Marsha Sharp – Lady Raider Basketball
Andre Emmett – Men’s Basketball
Sheryl Swoopes – Lady Raider Basketball
Dub Malaise – Men’s Basketball
Carolyn Thompson – Lady Raider Basketball
Jim Reed – Men’s Basketball
Here’s athletic director Kirby Hocutt:
“These Ring of Honor inductees will be a tremendous addition to the legacy and heritage of Red Raider Basketball,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “The careers of those that we will celebrate in this Ring of Honor brought national recognition to this university and left an incredible mark on our basketball programs. Their names will become a permanent fixture inside United Supermarkets Arena so that all who enter will be reminded of their outstanding contributions to Texas Tech University.”
You can check out the link for short bios on each of the players. I don’t know that I have much of an opinion about who was left off from the men’s perspective because I don’t have the historical base that maybe a lot of you have. I’ve heard the names of Rick Bullock and Dub Malaise, but I think arguments could have been made that maybe Polk Robinson and Gerald Myers could have been included pretty easily, but I think this is a pretty fantastic initial group of men.
For the ladies, I can’t think of a better group. Sharp is arguably the best coach to ever coach at Texas Tech, regardless of men or women, Swoopes is one of the greatest players to ever play for Texas Tech and Thompson is the leading scorer for the men or women.
