Leading Off

No News. This is the first time in quite a while that I didn’t have any football or basketball news. Of course, we’re at the point of the year, finals and whatnot, where there shouldn’t be any news other than coaches out on the recruiting trail (which they are for both programs, I just don’t post every tweet where they are visiting). It’s been such a run since November, for both programs (both good and bad), that it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. I will actually have a post coming up later today about football, so be on the lookout for that.

Regardless, it is good to get the spotlight on track and field, gunning for another Big 12 Championship and softball as they enter post-season play in the Big 12 Championship and given their season, they are all but assured of a NCAA appearance. I can’t remember the last time that happened so I’m happy for that program.

Pickens Supports Vet School. I don’t think this qualifies as political talk, I thought quite a bit about whether or not it did or not and decided that since it dealt with the question of the Texas Tech veterinary school, I’d go with it. In any event, T. Boone Pickens wrote on TribTalk an opinion piece about the issue:

It’s common knowledge that Texas Tech has had to overcome numerous roadblocks and interference to get to where they are today with this vet school. But that just goes to show how necessary and how supported this vision is.

Texas Tech’s veterinary school will support an important industry that fuels our state, and provide educational opportunities for new generations of Texans.

State funding will unlock more than $90 million that has been raised by generous donors and communities in Texas who strongly believe in Texas Tech’s veterinary school.

This is a no-brainer, and should be a cut-and-dried funding issue. It has been debated long enough and, in that time, the need for the veterinary school has only grown greater. The Legislature should approve the funding, with no strings attached.

Quite honestly, I love the shade thrown out there by Pickens to the Texas A&M brethren about the “roadblocks” and “interference” which were essentially Robert Duncan “resigning” as Chancellor and that entire fiasco with the Board of Trustees and the “alleged” TAMU interference with Texas Tech University’s operation. I’m using a lot of “air quotes”. Anyway, it was nice to see Pickens throw his weight behind the Texas Tech vet school because he certainly didn’t have to give an opinion at all, but feels it is important enough to opine on it.

Whizzer. Man what a great picture and I hope like heck someone can get Whizzer to a game this fall.
