Iowa Western Community College defensive end Devin Drew is the 18th commit for the 2020 class.

Last year for the Reivers (this is the Iowa Western C.C. mascot), Drew had 58 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 17 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, and a couple of pass-break-ups. As a freshman, Drew was pretty good, 39 tackles, 5 sacks, and 6.5 tackles for a loss. As an aside, I didn’t know what a Reiver was and apparently, reivers were “raiders along the Anglo-Scottish border from the late 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century.”

It should also be noted that when Drew was in high school, he was a basketball prospect in the Kansas City area, but probably didn’t get tall enough for that power forward frame.

Drew is a big defensive end that primarily plays with his hand down and lines up mostly on the right side, but he’ll flip to the other side as well. He’s a really good athlete, I like how he will stay true to his responsibility, so if he’s supposed to play the run, he does that, checks, and then goes to make the play. Not a lot of moves from Drew, just using his athleticism to make plays, which I fine with and speaks to his ability to make so many plays without being really refined. And there’s no doubt that Texas Tech needs a pass-rushing defensive end. Eli Howard is a senior in 2020 so there needs to be defensive line options and a lot of high school defensive ends aren’t physically ready. Drew is physically ready and am super-excited he will arrive in December. Oh, and you want a player-comp? Former basketball player in high school and plays on the defensive line? How about Kerry Hyder?
